Stephen King and Nelson DeMille on Ed McBain

I think Evan Hunter, known by that name or as Ed McBain, was one of the most influential writers of the postwar generation. He was the first writer to successfully merge realism with genre fiction, and by so doing I think he may actually have created the kind of popular fiction that drove the best-seller lists and lit up the American imagination in the years 1960 to 2000. Books as disparate as The New Centurions, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, The Godfather, Black Sunday, and The Shining all owe a debt to Evan Hunter, who taught a whole generation of baby boomers how to write stories that were not only entertaining but that truthfully reflected the times and the culture. He will be remembered for bringing the so-called "police procedural" into the modern age, but he did so much more than that. And he was one hell of a nice man. --Stephen King

Way back in the mid-1970s, when I was a new writer and police series were very big, my editor asked me to do a series called Joe Ryker, NYPD. I had no idea how to write a police detective novel, but the editor handed me a stack of books and said, “These are the 87th Precinct novels by Ed McBain. Read them and you’ll know everything you need to know about police novels.” After I read the first book--which I think was Let’s Hear It for the Deaf Man--I was hooked, and I read every Ed McBain I could get my hands on. Then I sat down and wrote my own detective novel, The Sniper, featuring Joe Ryker. My series never reached the heights of the 87th Precinct series, but by reading those classic masterpieces, I learned all I needed to know about urban crime and how detectives think and act. And I had a hell of a time learning from the master. Years later, when I actually got to meet Ed McBain/Evan Hunter, I told him this story, and he said, “I would have liked it better if my books inspired you to become a detective instead of becoming my competition.” Evan and I became friends, and I was privileged to know him and honored to be in his company. I remain indebted to him for his good advice over the years. But most of all, I thank him for hundreds of hours of great reading. --Nelson DeMille

About the Author
Ed McBain was one of the pen names of successful and prolific crime fiction author Evan Hunter (1926–2005). Debuting in 1956, the popular 87th Precinct series is one of the longest running crime series ever published, featuring more than 50 novels, and is hailed as "one of the great literary accomplishments of the last half-century." McBain was awarded the Grand Master Award for lifetime achievement in 1986 by the Mystery Writers of America and was the first American to receive the Cartier Diamond Dagger award from the Crime Writers Association of Great Britain.

GREAT READING!!!1

I know of no one else who can pack so much action into such a short period of time. This is book ten and I am trying to read them in order. The story in nearly all the books take place in a day or two. The books are short and make for a quick read. They are very enjoyable. A boy is kidnapped, but it is the wrong boy. They were supposed to get the son of Douglas King, a very wealth man, but they got the son of his chauffeur instead. King has all his money tied up in buying controling interest in a shoe company and if he pays the ransom he loses the shoe company. The men from the 87th are trying to find who took the boy but if King does not pay they think the boy will be killed. Every thing moves at a very fast pace, will King do what is right and pay up? Will Carella and company find the boy? Makes for a good read.

Good, solid read, but lacks the depth of High and Low.

King's Ransom seems like a very unlikely source of material for Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, better know for his samurai epics. However, Kurosawa pulled it off brilliantly, making one of his best films. The source book, by Ed McBain, is solid and well written -- and exciting read. However, it lacks the depth and the staying power of High and Low. The story, as told by McBain, is a straightforward detective story. There are no larger issues contemplated than whether Douglas King should pay the ransom for his chauffer's son, mistakenly kidnapped in place of his own son. Kurosawa, in contrast, turned the story into an indictment of Japanese society with its rigid views of where everyone fits in the caste system. We understand Douglas King's motivation, but he never generates the sympathy we feel for Toshiro Mifune's equivalent character in High and Low. It's a good book, but unlike High and Low, it doesn't really stay with you afterwards.

He does it again

Once again I'm reminded why Ed McBain's work was so loved. I honestly feel connected to every cop in the 87th squad and am so glad McBain was so prolific! Once again I'm starting at the beginning and working my way through all 55 of the 87th Precinct series. I dread reaching the end. McBain left quite a legacy. Read the 87th Precinct books. You'll become addicted!

Not Upto LP Standards

Lonely Planet Guides have lost their way over the past few years. I have been using LP books for 40 years but this book on Capetown and the Garden Route is a real disappointment. Compared to The Rough Guide, also bought recently, which is far superior and has better/more detailed useable info. LP guide is just about ok for CPT but has almost no info on the Garden Route. There is a lot of regurgitated info on the history/politics of S. Africa, comprising almost half the book; this I consider padding. I was looking for more detailed and useable info on CPT and the Garden Route - feel let down. Especially, when I compare this product to the products of a few years ago. I hope they go back to the old ethos!

Missing detail, not your typical Lonely Planet detailed travel guide

I purchased for my trip to Cape Town. I was very disappointed in the lack of detail in the book and local knowledge that is typically a corner stone of Lonely Planet books. The writers missed several key tourist attractions or when they it did cover them they were done at a very broad brush overview level. Their maps where hard to use and incomplete making it difficult to navigate without using another full map, we end up using the rental car map which was much better.

Informative But a Bit Disorganized

Nice job of providing lots of practical information for the tourist to Cape Town and environs. Although I'm finding this a great resource, it seems like it might have been a bit better organized, as information about sites is found in multiple places, and I was continually trying to figure out how different neighborhoods relate to the whole.

Liana Lowenstein, MSW, is an author, sought-after speaker, and practitioner with over 22 years of specialized work with children, adolescents and families. She provides clinical supervision to mental health practitioners and consults to several mental health agencies. I use this book almost every day; the activites and ideas for kid's groups are wonderful and most are good for all age groups. The best part about this book is that the author has included the objectives and goals for ea group activity-a bonus for those of us doing tx plans and progress notes. Love this book!

This book is a Godsend! I'm a fairly "green" counselor, and I recently began working with my local child protective services agency. I can't tell you how helpful and empowering Lowenstein's suggested play therapy techniques have been to me, and most importantly, my clients! I'm buying ALL of her books ASAP!

Very well written from a completely different perspective. Not the usual story about this time and part of the world. The Author relates the diffucult and different situations local people found themselves in during that time, all woven into an intriguing storyline.

Claustrophobic, Tense, Gripping

A well crafted read with good tension. As the reader follows Tinashe along his quest to protect his younger sister Hazvinei, the narrative constricts tighter and tighter, until suddenly they, like he, are focused solely on her powerful, dark presence and what misfortune it might bring upon the boy and the world around him.

If the diet is not regulated for the individual, no amount of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine will get a complete and lasting treatment effect. Therefore, it is vitally important that patients seeking acupuncture and Chinese medical treatment understand both the importance of a good diet and how to select foods for their particular pattern of imbalance. This book can also be used by anyone interested in achieving a higher level of health through modifying their diet. It seems that every few months someone comes out with a new wonder diet that supposedly will cure everyone's ills. Often these diets disappear in a matter of another few months. Chinese medicine is the oldest, continuously professionally practiced, literate, secular medicine in the world today, and its theories on a healthy diet have been honed and tested by more than 100 generations of highly trained and intelligent professional practitioners. In other words, Chinese dietary therapy has stood the test of time.

Received my book pretty quickly, and it was well packaged -- but was surprised that it was actually a previous library item! Don't believe this was mentioned in the description of the book, only that it was like new. Good condition and this was fine, just not expected and I would have preferred a more current printing of the book.

The titular wood itself is fictional, inspired by Wittenham Clumps and Wytham Woods (both near Oxford where the author was living when he wrote the first book) and borrowing its name from a village in West Sussex. In the course of the books, individual moles travel great distances quite quickly (Duncton Wood in Oxfordshire to Siabod in Wales and back again for example).

A gem of a book!

I bought this book on a lark after somebody on the internet mentioned it and I found that the reviews on amazon were overwhelmingly positive. I'm so glad I took a chance on this book -- I absolutely loved it. It was a great story, jam-packed with love and adventure. Like other reviewers said, it's a bit of Watership Down meets LOTR. But this is selling the story short. It's the characters in this book that make it so captivating. I fell in love with the moles of Duncton Wood and I can't wait to read the sequels which I ordered before I ever finished this 500+ page book

I really can't recommend this book enough and I want to thank the other reviewers on here who made me decide to *risk* 23 cents plus shipping

Duncton Wood Fantastic

Duncton Wood is a Adventure-Love story like no other. It's the story of two Moles, Bracken and Rebecca, and the adventures they have as they try to protect Duncton Wood from Mandrake an outsider and oddly enough, Rebecca's father. They must face the problems of mole life head on, while maintaining faith in the stone. It's unfortunate that this novel is being compared with Watership Down, due to the fact that Watership Down, a great novel on it's own, falls short when compared against Duncton Wood. The animal kingdom as shown in Duncton Wood is savage and the survival of the fittest is a fact of life and death. This book is classified as a childrens book, but in truth it is for adults. It is at times as dark as it is uplifting. I recently purchased the other five books in the Duncton series.

Better the Watership Down

This is undoubtedly the best animal fantasy there is. It is along the lines of Watership Down, but far greater. Its characters are moles that act much as moles really do, but with language, intelligence, purpose, religion, and above all spiritual depth. To lend authenticity, the author spent a year studying a colony of moles first hand, as well as educating himself with scientific studies of moles. But then comes imagination, and the imagination is great indeed. The moles (unlike, at least for most of us, real moles) move us and touch us deep in our psyches, deep in our spirits. It is both an earthy and a mystical masterpiece. It is also full of action (for instance, in the fights for leadership, territories, and mates) and adventure (especially in Bracken's journeys in the latter part of the book). If this book has a fault it is that it seems constantly to be ending, then continuing, like a sermon where the preacher is always saying "lastly" and lasts. But for its wisdom, beauty, and imagination, this definately gets 5 stars.

Sooo Beautiful and heartfelt! Gave me goosebumps!!

I truly enjoyed this story. The characters were so eloquently portrayed and richly thought out. This was a first read for me by this author and will definitely not be the last. The funny moments were hilarious and the sexy moments were beautifully written. Andi & Ryan had no clue what they were getting themselves into and lucky for them it worked like magic! They had a true bond through their friendship that helped nudge them in the right direction down a strong and lovely journey. I was so enthralled with this story that I couldnt put it down. The pages seem to creep up on me and by the time I realized it, it was almost over and my clock turned to 1:30 am. Guess mama us going to be tired during carpool tomorrow!!!

Loved It More Than The Homeless Guy Who Lives By The Mailbox!

Delivery girl is one of the funniest books I've read since the packet series. I just loved it from cover to cover.

Andi works for her family business, Peretti’s Pizza. On the to be a comedian working dingy club to dingy club. Her biggest fan is a homeless guy who lives by a mailbox. One day she delivers a pizza to hot hockey God Ryan Pierce---who answers the door naked as the day he was born! The girl who finds humor in everything she does is suddenly at a loss for words. Well, it doesn't help she hits his expensive car either. I loved Andi's character. She made the book worth reading. She was flawed, but she also never forgot who she was. Being chased by a super hot hockey player can boost anyone's self-image.

Ryan Pierce never thought ordering a pizza would open up his future. He had ambitions--move up in the hockey world and win a Stanley Cup. Meeting Andi was completely random, but he was intrigued. He had fun getting to know her. He orders pizzas hoping Andi would show up so he could get just a little time with her. He became Peretti's Pizza's best customer! Well, that and Andi's dad basically pimped her out so Ryan would keep giving those HUGE tips. Ryan comes across as naive, but he's so infatuated with Andi he's desperate to bring her into his world.

Angela, Andi's dad, Ryan's agent brother and his fiance, and an evil witch are all side characters with their own stories.

Angela is so hilarious. She's brutally honest and blunt. Angela and Andi make a great team. I think we all want a friend like Angela. Her character is one of those who adds perks to the story.

Andi's dad just adds humor to an already funny story.

Ryan's brother and fiance are supporting characters as well, but they could probably get their own book.

I'm not saying who and what "the wicked witch" is because she's a part of the story I don't want to spoil.

I couldn't stop giggling. Andi, Ryan and all the other characters complete a well-rounded and hilariously romantic story! You have to check it out today. If you get tired of all those angsty, "I have a secret" romance stories, this is one that will definitely lighten your spirits!

It's an absolutely great love story. From start to finish you fall in love with Ryan. He is what every girl dreams and hopes for. And a mother who welcomes you as one if her own. Andi is a girl like many of us. We don't think we're all that great and someone as gorgeous as Ryan would ever fall for us. You'll be cheering for them both to the very end. You really feel the love from them. Great , believable writing from Lily Kate. Her 1st book for me. I can't wait to read more of her books.
