Gods of Heaven and Earth

If one were to draw an imaginary line through the last two hundred years, starting with Goya and the Disasters of War, perhaps pausing briefly with Daumier and then moving resolutely to the trenches of the first world war, some of the lithographs of George Bellows, Otto Dix and Grosz. And if that imaginary line were to pick up the expressionist thread again in Mexico, most particularly with Orozco and Jose Luis Cuevas then I think that Witkin, rather than a shocking purveyor of disturbing images can be seen as the latest -and one of the finest- inheritors of a very solid and well-grounded strand in the history of Western Art.
Sometimes he is even very funny, as when, very conscious of academic art, he mimics Velasquez and Ingres, but then Goya could be very funny, too. Usually however Witkin is about as funny as Goya's impalements or as the trench war lithographs of Otto Dix.
Definitely not a book for the "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything crowd" If you like your expressionism with a bite, this is great stuff. If you prefer tame, decorative expressionism there's always Maurice Sendak.

o pushing the role of the photographer as one who photographs the poor, the odd, the strange, the perverse, the sexual underworld in the tradition of Weegee, Arbus, etc.

o pushing the adaptation of famous works of art in the past into modern pieces.

o and if you can't stomach what you find, you should at least be able to appreciate the quality of the photo-manipulation.

About the Author
Philip J. Pratt is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science at Grand Valley State University, where he taught for 33 years. His teaching interests include database management, systems analysis, complex analysis, and discrete mathematics. He has authored more than 75 textbooks and has co-authored three levels of Microsoft Office Access 2013 books for this popular Shelly Cashman Series and A Guide to SQL.

Mary Z. Last has taught computer information systems since 1984. She retired from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Belton, Texas, where she was an Associate Professor and the Director of the Center for Effectiveness in Learning and Teaching. WARNING! This book is a 300 page advertisment for the author's employer

After reading the reviews I thought this would be a useful book. It certainly has lots of information in it, that you can find for free on the internet. I certainly did not learn anything I already did not know.

Although that was annoying it was not as infuriating as finding out that the author works for a company called HomeAway Inc. She fully disclosed the fact that she worked for them, which is fine, but she must have forgotten that almost all of the portal sites she mentioned are owned by HomeAway Inc, a small little fact that must have slipped her mind when her company was lining her pocketbook. In one passage on page 142 she recommends that you sign up for all 4 of the portal sites she `recommends' and only puts and asterisk by HomeAway, failing to state that HomeAway owns the other 3 that she 'recommends' you sign up for. Nice Christine, thanks for the full disclosure. After she recommends you don't go with a rental management company (in Chapter 9 she has a personal crusade against property management companies) because they take too much money, she turns around and `recommends' sending $1500 to her parent company. Wow, the hypocrisy!!! She certainly has chutzpah.

She peppers the books with 'recommendations' of websites that are either owned or affiliated with the company that employs her. I would recommend buying a book on how to rent vacation homes from someone who is not in the pocket of a company whose job it is to take a percentage of your vacation rental income. Maybe someone with at least some degree of ethics and objectivity.

For full disclosure's sake, I am not affiliated with any rental management company or any company that directly or indirectly competes with Home Away Inc. In fact, I am not even in the real estate industry in any capacity. It is just very aggravating to find out that I spent $20 to get a 300 page advertisement for HomeAway Inc.

It turns out that Mrs. Karpinski is just an arm of the HomeAway Inc marketing machine. I do not think that the author is the `expert' that she claims to be, just a huckster trying to sell the wares of HomeAway Inc. I hope in her next edition she does the ethical thing and decides to fully disclose her relationship with what she is trying to sell you on.

If you think I am just some crazy loon who likes to rant, just do a little internet research and you will quickly find out that HomeAway Inc owns most, if not all of the `recommendations' by the author.

For some, an invaluable source of information and counsel

Obviously, the value of this book will be determined entirely by its relevance to a specific reader who is now thinking about buying (or who now owns) a vacation rental property and needs expert advice on HOW to manage, furnish, maintain, and promote that investment. I have never owned such a property but have rented several over the years. Some were rented directly from their owner; others were rented through an agency engaged by their owner. The comments which follow are based on the premise that I have decided to purchase a second home. Let's say it is located where there are two peak seasons, summer (swimming, boating, golf, tennis, etc.) and winter (skiing, skating, snow boarding, etc.) My objective is to maximize rental income from it during both seasons. These are some of the questions I need to answer:
1. Where and how to begin?
2. How should I finance it?
3. Which numbers need to be crunched?
4. How to determine which property is the right place for me?.
5. Should I have a management company handle everything, use a management partnership program, or self-manage the property? Why?
6. Which are the most effective strategies, tactics, and resources for marketing my rental property?
7. What about financial terms and conditions (e.g. pricing)?
8. Which criteria to use when selecting renters?
9. What is the best system for processing reservations?
10. Which are the most common problems? How to solve each?
Karpinski addresses these and other critically important questions throughout 18 carefully-organized and well-written chapters, followed by seven appendices in which she provides forms (e.g. rental rules and regulations), identifies most helpful Web sites, explains special discounts, identifies vacation exchange Web sites, lists state sales tax offices, refers her reader to learning centers throughout the U.S. (e.g. to improve computer skills), and concludes with an annotated list of individuals and companies she highly recommends.
If you are thinking about purchasing a vacation rental property or if you now own one and are dissatisfied with its ROI, this book will be invaluable. However, with all due respect to Karpinski, I think it would be foolish to rely on only one source of information and counsel. Once again I am reminded of Derek Bok's response when outraged parents of Harvard students complained about a tuition increase: "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." Deciding whether or not to purchase a vacation property obviously requires rigorous and extensive due diligence. In my opinion, a careful reading and then (yes) re-reading of Karpinski's book is essential to that process. That said, check out other sources on the same subject, including books offered by Amazon which have received the highest ratings by readers. This book will also be helpful to current owners who have hired a management company or participate in a management partnership program. In Chapter 5, Karpinski explains why self-management "is the only way to maximize your income on your vacation property." For many current owners, that may well be true but only IF they are willing to invest the time and energy self-management requires.

Some good info buried in a too folksy style

The topic of the book is dead-on for what I am looking for... how to rent by owner a beach condo I just bought. Unfortunately, it reads like a How to Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich book from an introductory writing class. I would think that anyone who can afford to buy a beach property doesn't need to be explained about what a fixed rate vs adjustable rate loan is.

The folksy nature and the rhetorical questions being asked and self-answered is not complementary to the topic and the intent of the book. I'm sure the author is excited about the topic, but I've never seen so many explanation points in a business/real estate book....

The author is very against management companies and goes to extremes to tell why one shouldn't be hired. She says a management company will keep 50 - 60% of gross profit. The mgmt companies I spoke to in my beach town charge 15 - 20% and by reputation are very different the the typical management company described here.

So, overall some good, useful information but you have to weed through alot of... Why??? Yes!!! The author could have benefited from an editor.

Underlying Not Without Peril is the not-so-subtle message that the Presidential Range, topping out at just over 6,000 feet, is as uncompromising as any other mountain range. After all, these mountains--named for Washington, Lincoln, Madison--are home to some of the most vicious weather recorded on the planet. Howe makes no judgment about those whose misfortunes he chronicles; there are tender moments that manage to stay faithful to a crusty Yankee sensibility, as in the tale of Lizzie Bourne, who died in a snowstorm while huddled in a makeshift lean-to. Howe quotes her uncle George: "She was dead--had uttered no complaint, expressed no regret or fear, but passed silently away." Such sober tales, scrupulously researched, tell the history of a mountain range and its climbers, some of whom are immortalized for their ill-fated treks. A catalog of death in the New England mountains. Although not high by world standards, New Hampshires Mount Washington is home to howling winds and monstrously cold temperatures, often the coldest in the Lower 48. For years, mountaineer and freelance journalist Howe has been haunting the mountain and nearby summits of the Presidential Range, a place where furious storms, hypothermia, and occasional bears take their toll on human visitors at all seasons. Howe catalogs the errors of the unfortunate victimsand silly mistakes which seem always to come into play whenever Americans head outside, whether the date is 1849 or 1994. (The most common of them, Howes evidence suggests, is the simple omission of appropriate cold-weather gear, for although the summertime temperature may approach 90 at Mount Washingtons base, the wind chill may take it down to freezing at the peak.) Few of Howes pointed tales end happily. Some of his protagonists slip easily into death, having made some misjudgment or another; others wander around for days in the woods, running from lightning and wild animals in scenes that would fit right into a sequel to The Blair Witch Project, before meeting their unhappy fate; a few others even make it off the mountain alive, but minus toes and fingers. Since there are only so many ways to die on a mountainsideyou can fall, freeze, or get munchedthe narrative tends to be repetitious, and a little judicious paring would have been welcome. Still, all these deaths lead up to a well-taken moral: It is not so much that Mount Washington is a killer, but that people approaching it need to take better care than many of them do. Combining painstaking historical research with his own intimate knowledge of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, Nicholas Howe recounts the struggles, deaths, and near escapes of hikers on Mount Washington. Howe gives us more than just facts of each accident, but he goes deeper, placing the accidents in the historical context of the times, including the period’s clothing and equipment, and providing a more complete understanding of the background and personalities of the people involved. Stories about the mountains that I love and paths that I have walked.

Since I grew up around the people and in the mountains this is of primary interest for me. For those who are less experienced and are interested this is a great book. Not just the stories but the people involved. Some of the people mentioned here were my fathers contemporaries and I earned my love of the mountains and the forests from them. There are fewer of that kind of clear thinking and courageous folks now but, this book is a good way to get a sense of what they were like.

Great Read For Anyone That Knows The White Mountains

I have lived in New England all my life and love the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Not only is the Mt. Washington valley breath taking in its beauty, but it is also home to some of the most inhospitable weather on earth. I hiked there extensively in my younger days, but never tackled the roughest of the trails that really were dangerous. But I did hike there in winter in some of the harshest conditions imaginable. And I really enjoyed immensely this book that relentlessly tells it like it is as to some of the most successful excursions, and a vast array of some of the most deadly and stupidest. There is something truly awesome to read about the successes and tragedies of some place that you yourself have experienced and survived. I couldn't put it down and plan on reading it again and again. Even if you have never even heard of the Presidential range in New Hampshire, the author does a terrific job of relating the story of the unfortunates with good research and a true knack for telling a tale without preaching. Oh make no mistake about it, anyone that has hiked the mountains there has found themselves shaking their heads at the foolishness of some that have never returned, or were found dead because of lack of experience or some other misfortune of not making the smartest decisions to be sure. But it also doesn't dwell on the tragedies with constant advice of what they did wrong and what we should learn from it. It truly just tells it like it is, and does it very well. Most enjoyable, and highly recommended... : )

I read this book because we will soon be setting out in the dead of winter to climb Mt Washington. For me, this book serves two purposes. First, the book provides a significant amount of anecdotal data on the topology of the mountain, its features and its trails. But more importantly, it brings to the gut the extreme conditions and serious dangers that can be encountered while on the mountain. Experienced and prudent climbers understand that living to summit another day is much better than risking death just to prove how manly (or womanly) you are. This book presents in a well written manner the folly of failing to recognize deteriorating conditions and not turning around. My respect for the mountain is certainly greater than it might have been before reading the well researched and well written book. Aside from this, the stories themselves are fascinating.
