Paul J. Silvia, PhD, is an associate professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, USA.His books include How to Write A Lot: A Practical Guide to Productive Academic Writing (2007) and Exploring the Psychology of Interest (2006). A useful (and funny) guide to academic writing

I'm a huge fan of Silvia's "How to Write a Lot." After buying that book about two years ago, I have set a daily writing schedule and stuck to it, and since doing so I have published several journal articles and gotten a federal grant. Silvia's new volume is incredibly useful, whether you are writing your first journal article or your fiftieth. It breaks down the process of writing journal articles into manageable bites (what are the three main formulas for an Introduction? When do you pick a target journal for your paper? What's the best strategy when you're asked to revise and resubmit a paper?), and it helped shake me out of some of the bad habits I'd developed. My writing was feeling stagnant, and this book gave me some needed perspective on how to communicate my ideas more effectively and efficiently. As a nice bonus, it's also really funny. Highly recommend.

Live-saver for a non-writer

As someone with a background in Math, writing is not my strong suit. But I had a thesis to write for my Ed Psych Master's and I struggled with how to make it organized but not formulaic. When this book was recommended to me, that all changed. The book is well-written and interesting, as well as easy to read. Each chapter walked you through how to approach writing or writing related tasks while keeping everything flexible enough that you don't feel like you're just following instructions in your writing.

About the Author
The late Hyam Maccoby was Emeritus Fellow of the Leo Baeck College, London, and Visiting Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Leeds from 1998 until his death. He published many books and articles on rabbinic literature, Jewish-Christian relations, Christian origins, and the origins of antisemitism. Among his writings are Revolution in Judaea (1980), The Sacred Executioner (1982), The Mythmaker (1986, second edition 1998), Early Rabbinic Writings (1988), Judas Iscariot and the Myth of Jewish Evil (1992), awarded the Wingate Prize, A Pariah People: The Anthropology of Antisemitism (1996), and Ritual and Morality: The Ritual Purity System and its Place in Judaism (1999).

During the Middle Ages, kings and popes would sometimes force Jews to engage in "disputations" with Christian scholars, in the hope that the Jews would thereby be converted (or at least embarrassed). In some of these disputations, the Jews were treated somewhat fairly, in others less so.

Maccoby describes three separate disputations: one in Paris in 1240, a second in Barcelona in 1263 (perhaps the fairest, and the most notable from the Jewish point of view because of the involvement of Nachmanides, one of the more well-known Jewish scholars of the medieval period), a third in Tortosa in 1413-14. In addition, he provides more-or-less contemporary summaries of the latter two disputations.

After reading Jaccoby's book, I was surprised how sophisticated both sides were by modern standards. The Christian "debaters" (often converts from Judaism) were much more sophisticated about Judaism than today's missionary-on-the-street; while the latter focuses solely on a few Biblical passages that he or she alleges shows Jesus to be Messiah, the former focused on Talmud and Midrash as well.

Christians took two very different lines: first, that the Talmud was a corruption of Biblical Judaism, and later that the Talmud actually supported Christianity. As to the latter, Christians relied heavily on Midrashic stories - for example, one which suggested that at the time of the Temple's destruction, the Messiah had already been born.

In response to the latter claim, Nachmanides not only attacked the Christian interpretations of the Midrash - but bluntly pointed out that this story is "either not true, or has some other interpretation derived from the secrets of the Sages." (p. 110). In other words, such Midrashic stories are fables designed to make a theological point, rather than literal truth.

Neat Little Book of Quotes; Not Just for Cat-lovers

CATFULNESS is actually a little book of quotes. The quotes were not necessarily inspired by cats, but each quote could be applied to living a "cat's life" and is accompanied by an illustration of the felines. The quotes are sometimes cute, sometimes inspirational, and sometimes just fun. The illustrations reminded me of classic 1960s cartoon illustrations or something out of an older issue of THE NEW YORKER. Although created with cat lovers in mind, CATFULNESS is a little book that even those who have never owned a cat as a pet can appreciate.

Comprehensive? I don't think so

While conceding the generalities described by other reviewers, I think it worth mentioning that the first two words I tried to look up in this dictionary — "secular" (as in "secular increase") and "exiguous" — weren't in it.

And neither is particularly difficult. I'm having a mild attack of buyer's remorse.

Update: I have now replaced my Cambridge with the Concise Oxford, with which I'm definitely happier. If English is not your native language, however, I'd say you're better off sticking with the Cambridge (see my review of the Concise for the reasons).

Excellent dictionary, nice CD but...

The dictionary is perfect! It has pronunciation for British, American and Australian English. It has an extensive list of usage examples for each entry. It also has some sections with subject-correlated words; for example, shows all different cars and describe their names, shows the car parts and some expressions related to the issue.
It comes with a CD that was intended to be interesting, since it has a voice engine that pronounces the words for you. BUT the application takes power from the computer, takes forever to startup and is excessively slow.
In a brief, only the dictionary is worth it.

Terrible technical problems

I bought the "Cambridge International Dictionary of English on CD-ROM (ISBN:0521775752)" thinking that item would be better than "Cambridge Dictionary of American English (CD-ROM INSIDE)" and "The New Oxford American Dictionary on CD-ROM", it was terrible mistake. This software has a lot of technical problems, I didn't be able to work with this dictionary. Really, I don't recommend this item.
I recommend the "Cambridge International Dictionary of English (Paperback) (ISBN:0521484219)", "Cambridge Dictionary of American English (CD-ROM INSIDE) [ISBN:0-521-77974-X], "Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary: Of Current English (Paperback) (ISBN:019431510X)" or "The New Oxford American Dictionary on CD-ROM (ISBN:0195150619). Those are all better than Cambridge International Dictionary of English on CD-ROM (ISBN:0521775752).
