How Should We Live?: Great Ideas from the Past for Everyday Life, by Roman Krznaric

There are many ways to try to improve our lives—we can turn to the wisdom of philosophers, the teachings of spiritual guides, or the latest experiments of psychologists. But we rarely look to history for inspiration—and when we do, it can be surprisingly powerful. In How Should We Live? the cultural historian Roman Krznaric explores twelve universal topics—including love, family, and empathy; work, time, and money—by illuminating the past and revealing the wisdom we have been missing. There is much to be learned from the ancient Greeks about the different varieties of love, for example, from medieval and Renaissance Europeans about living with passion and facing the realities of death, from various indigenous cultures on bringing up our children, and from Japanese pilgrims on the art of travel. Whether it is the different uses of the senses or nature across time, or changing attitudes to belief and creativity, How Should We Live? is full of ideas and stories from the past. A wonderful work of “practical history,” it sheds invaluable light on the decisions we make every day and shows what history can teach us about the art of living.

Review

“A fascinating rattlebag of intelligent, stimulating essays on everything from work to love, time to empathy . . . densely researched but readable, wise, and witty. By taking the long view to debunk some myths of modern life . . . Krznaric frees us from passing trends to answer the fundamental question: how should we live now?” —Financial Times

“This modern guide to living a good life by nurturing relationships, giving more to others, and resisting the self-imposed tyrannies of work, time, ambition, and achievement, is entertaining and instructive.” —Times

“An intriguing upmarket self-help guide. . . . The virtue of this book is that it takes a number of ideas that we might regard as givens of the natural order of things . . . and makes clear how historically contingent they are.” —Guardian

“Human history provides examples of almost every possible lifestyle or philosophical position; Krznaric selects some of the most telling. . . . Our responsibility, he argues, is not just to take inspiration from the past; we also need to recognize where we have inherited damaging or limiting attitudes.” —Independent

A modern take on ancient wisdom.
By SInohey
Modern Western society is caught up in a whirlwind of materialism fueled by unquenchable consumerism, prompted by an abundance of choices and an unending variety of options; where to live, what to wear, what to eat, what to drive, or where to vacation and recreate. The choices of education, career and jobs is sometimes baffling. Even the accessibility to potential mates, romantic partners or spouses presents an array of candidates thru personal contacts or the technology of social media. The abundance of so many alternatives is a blessing of modern times but may also be a curse. Where can we find the time, within the constraints of a lifetime, to partake from it all? Time has become our obsession and our currency; we parcel it to our interests and activities, to our friends and significant others, but often unequally and frequently "rob Peter to pay Paul".

This book teaches that the fast paced and stressful life is not conducive to happiness or fulfilment. The author, cultural thinker and philosopher, Roman Krznaric, believes that we must consciously `deprogram' ourselves to achieve a satisfying life and look to the "Ancients" for guidance. "I think of history as a wonderbox, similar to the curiosity cabinets of the Renaissance -- what the Germans called a Wunderkammer. Collectors used these cabinets to display an array of fascinating and unusual objects, each with a story to tell..... There is much to learn about life opening the wonderbox of history."

In the Introduction, Krznaric writes, "How to pursue the art of living has become the great quandary of our age. I believe that the future of the art of living can be found by gazing into the past. If we explore how people have lived in other epochs and cultures, we can draw out lessons for the challenges and opportunities of everyday life.... It is astonishing that, until now, we have made so little effort to unveil this wisdom from the past, which is based on how people have actually lived rather than utopian dreamings of what might be possible."
The book is reminiscent of George Myerson's writings about attaining happiness from learning the lessons of history.

The book is divided into four parts: Nurturing Relationships, Making a living, Discovering the world and Breaking conventions. These are each composed of three sections. Krznaric expounds on empathy, family, love, money, time, work, nature, senses, travel as well as belief, creativity and deathstyle. He gives examples throughout the ages from ancient Greece to modern times and from various cultures, from Japan to the Olmecs and the Toltecs - The ideas of Socrates to the writings of Matsuo Basho (17th century master of haiku), the philosophy of Thoreau and the career of Van Gogh - about gender roles in housework and child rearing, career choices, job satisfaction, and freedom from time restrictions to allow for a more contemplative existence, "anything becomes interesting if you look at it long enough."(Gustave Flaubert).

In the chapter about Love, Krznaric defines two great tragedies; the loss of the Greek definition of the different varieties of love - eros, phila, ludus, pragma, agape, and philautia -that could be found in sex, family, friendships, amongst strangers and self. The other falsehood is the notion of romantic love found exclusively in a soulmate; this began in the music and poetry of Abbasid Persia to the Middle Ages European courtly love and finally to the Dutch Golden Age of the seventeenth century. It has been with us ever since.

Krznaric reminds us that empathy is not the Golden Rule, but as George Bernard Shaw said, "Do not do unto others as you would have them do unto you -- they may have different tastes." It requires imagining others' views and then acting accordingly. "Empathy matters not just because it makes you good, but because it is good for you." The author uses St. Augustine and George Orwell to make his point. The latter is "one person who did more than most others to transform this experiential form of empathy into an extreme sport." He goes on to give a summary of Orwell's upper middle class privileged family, his military career in Burma and how that job made him "see the dirty work of Empire at close quarters" and left him oppressed "with an intolerable sense of guilt." After leaving the army, Orwell for several years, deliberately experienced poverty by living as a tramp, from several days to a few weeks, in the streets of East London; penniless and homeless he joined the destitute begging for money, hungry and sleeping in shelters. Orwell succeeded in experiencing the injustice of poverty and feeling true empathy by "standing in the other other men's shoes."

Krznaric devotes a chapter to "our strange relationship with time" complete with metaphors and its effect on our lives, thoughts and emotions. We have become controlled by Time since the invention of the mechanical clock in the 13th century and, 500 years later, we were all captive to pocket-size timepieces and wristwatches - that are now being supplanted by electronic digital devices.
The advent of the Industrial Revolution transformed time into a commodity subordinated to the Protestant ethic that associates hard work/efficiency with virtue. It made shift work possible and the eight-hour work day with an hour break for lunch (a German notion). However in Britain 20% do not have a lunch break and the siesta has almost disappeared from Italy, Spain and Latin countries.
We let ourselves be regimented by Time the author adds because, "On some level we fear boredom. A deeper explanation is that we are afraid that an extended pause would give us the time to realize that our lives are not as meaningful and fulfilled as we would like them to be. The time for contemplation has become an object of fear, a demon." Krznaric even goes as far as suggesting a"chronological diet" without any mechanical/digital timepieces, to make you "less likely to interrupt a conversation or a thought with a glance at your watch which sends you scuttling off to the next task." He gives the example that, "Aboriginals did not work all day but spent time with family, friends and idle pleasures."

In the "Epilogue," Krznaric concludes that, "We might live our lives in a thousand different ways. And the civilisations of the past enable us to recognize that our habitual ways of loving, working, creating and dying are not the only options before us. We need only open the wonderbox of history and look inside to see new and surprising possibilities for the art of living. Let them spark our curiosity, captivate our imaginations and inspire our actions."

The book is a fascinating compilation of the various cultures and their legacy, the individual lives, deeds and thoughts of luminaries and humanity's collective morality and conscience. The exhortation to `slow down and live in the moment', which permeates the entire work, is the "mindfulness" of Buddha's teachings presented in a new light. The reader should benefit from the philosophical tracts, historical vignettes and a compendium of mythology, necrology and traditions of various cultures presented in a lucid crisp narrative.

Well-written, thoughtful, "common sense" appoach to what history can teach us about how to be happy
By B. J. Ford
"How Should We Live?" by Roman Krznaric is an enjoyable book, interesting, well-written, encouraging, hopeful, uplifting, entertaining, and informative. The tone is conversational, even witty and clever at times. The occasional light-hearted remarks and humorous observations are appreciated, as this is the kind of material that writers tend to over-intellectualize (i.e. make boring and / or incomprehensible) or over-simplify (i.e. insult the reader by wasting their time).
Krznaric questions the status quo and provides historical context for aspects of our modern lives that we may have grown so accustomed to we take them for granted. When dealing with topics such as family, work, time, and creativity, Krznaric often clearly and concisely identifies 4 or 5 contributing factors, kinds, or types of things, then discusses the relationships between them and the influence they've had on each other in ways that sometimes seem commonsensical but which may never have occurred to the reader (and even if some of the conclusions are not ground-breaking, it's nice to be reminded). His engaging volume challenges the reader to reconsider and evaluate alternative ways to be / live, and he offers sound, practical suggestions for making day to day life more rewarding. I refer to his insights as suggestions rather than solutions or advice, because, in his effort to connect with his audience, he clearly recognizes some ideas will resonate more than others with different people.
Krznaric is clearly a curious person, a talented writer, and a well-read thinker, as the comprehensive bibliography, quality illustrations, and chapter notes demonstrate. The notes do not interfere with the flow of the text.
Face it: the digital age has definitely seemed to have removed some of the historical barriers to publication that used to exist. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean there are a lot of books out there. To find a book that is actually worth the time it takes to read it is rewarding. "How Should We Live?" by Roman Krznaric is one of those timeless books.

This book should be required reading for middle schoolers!
By Barbara
Very interesting book, touching on many topics of life and how we embraced it from the Middle Ages up until current day. Much has changed, including the fact that we have let many of the civilized and genteel practices slip by the wayside!

Better than most compilations
By Amazon Customer
This is another of the well made 80's compilations Starbucks has released in recent memory. Whoever put this together and chose the songs is obviously a music lover first and foremost. This doesn't contain the 15 biggest hits of a particular 80's year and isn't even crammed with the biggest names of the time. What it does, and does well is recreate an honest representation of the darker post punk music that was making waves and would soon reinvent pop music as we knew it. This particular cd is my least favorite of the three but it is a great addition to my music collection.

There Will Be War Volume X, by Jerry Pournelle, Larry Niven, Ben Bova, Gregory Benford, David VanDyke, Martin van Creveld, Phillip E. Pour

Created by the bestselling SF novelist Jerry Pournelle, THERE WILL BE WAR is a landmark science fiction anthology series that combines top-notch military science fiction with factual essays by various generals and military experts on everything from High Frontier and the Strategic Defense Initiative to the aftermath of the Vietnam War. It features some of the greatest military science fiction ever published, such Orson Scott Card’s “Ender’s Game” in Volume I and Joel Rosenberg’s “Cincinnatus” in Volume II. Many science fiction greats were featured in the original nine-volume series, which ran from 1982 to 1990, including Robert Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Philip K. Dick, Gordon Dickson, Poul Anderson, John Brunner, Gregory Benford, Robert Silverberg, Harry Turtledove, and Ben Bova.

25 years after the end of the Cold War and the publication of the ninth volume, Dr. Pournelle has revived his classic science fiction series with Castalia House. THERE WILL BE WAR Volume X continues the tradition of combining top-notch military science fiction with first-rate real-world analysis by military experts. The Cold War may have ended, but as recent events everywhere from Paris to Syria have demonstrated, war has not.

THERE WILL BE WAR Volume X is edited by Jerry Pournelle and features 18 stories, articles, and poems. Of particular note are “Battle Station” by Ben Bova, “Flashpoint: Titan” by Cheah Kai Wai, "What Price Humanity?" by David VanDyke, and the eerily prescient "The Man Who Wasn't There” by Gregory Benford. Volume X also includes timely essays on "War and Migration" by Martin van Creveld, "The 4GW Counterforce" by William S. Lind and LtCol Gregory A. Thiele, USMC, and "The Deadly Future of Littoral Sea Control" by CDR Phillip E. Pournelle, USN, which was awarded the 2015 Literary Award by the Surface Navy Association for "the best professional article in any publication addressing Surface Navy or surface warfare issues."

Classic great SciFi with a military theme braced by insightful essays on contemporary military issues. Buy it!
By Fred Reitberger
In a nutshell, Jerry Pournelle has collected a cornucopia of great military SciFi, fascinating military history and great current military analysis. It has something for everyone. The stories move quickly and draw the reader into the experience. A number of them left me ready to jump up and cheer for the good guys. Others seemed so prophetic and applicable to today and the near tomorrow that the writers must have a time machine hidden away. I will be thinking about a few of them for a long time.

Solid, well written, great characters and stories that put the fun back into science fiction. The history and opinion pieces are timely. This is a book you will read more then once.

Great read.
By Daniel Shaw
This is my first exposure to this series, and I find this installment intriguing. I found the preface of this book quite striking. As one who is not old enough to remember the end of the Cold War, let alone the period itself, the only perspective I have on either is the writings and recollections of those who write it. I do, however, vividly recollect 9/11, and wrote an opinion piece on the Iraq War for my school newspaper. Sadly, even both of these seem far and distant from the rise of ISIS and the current migrant crisis gripping the West. In light of this, whenever I see writings proclaiming the fall of the USSR to be "The End of History," I feel a mix of disgust and perhaps a bit of pity at their jubilantly naive claims to world peace. In contrast to the experiences of many of my generation, their wild claims seem a kind of cruel joke. As noted therein, there WILL be war... all that changes is how it is waged.

I found the non-fiction to be very insightful. In particular, the chapter on migration and war, written by the esteemed Martin van Creveld, was a take on migration that is not often seen today, and is perhaps the most important conversation that can be had in modern geopolitics. Two interesting topics also covered were the discussion of both light infantry and the importance of navies controlling littoral(shoreline) areas, which are more closely related than I would have otherwise thought. Both underline the fact that maximizing firepower often comes at the expense of essential aspects of a particular military action.

The fiction portion was a refreshing look at military SF. I admittedly do not read much in the way of that sub-genre, but I greatly enjoyed what I saw here. I felt a wide emotional range in reading the various stories. Some were funny, others grim; some were contemplative and gripping, others surreal and silly. My favorite stories were the ones centered around naval combat in space, of which there were several. The fiction selections created a sense of mystery, wonder, and at times apprehension, much to the credit of the authors.

Overall, I felt that the structuring of the various passages, both fiction and non-fiction, flowed in an intuitive way. In particular, a poem based on a work by Rudyard Kipling set the stage well for the fiction passage that followed. I am very much interested in reading the earlier volumes, and also look forward to future releases.

Great stories that will keep the pages turning
By Matthew
This book is an absolute blast. A collection of short stories all of which have a military sci-fi theme, the stories themselves trend towards the top in terms of writing and story telling. They run the gamut from being written in 2015 to having been first published in 1957 yet the writing is done so well that the age of some of the stories is not apparent and they feel fresh and crisp even today.
For me the real gems are the bits of non-fiction writing dispersed throughout the book. These nuggets of gold come from those who have a deep understanding of the challenges the modern world faces and they state their case for what they believe needs to be done in order for an advanced military to successfully meet those threats.
All in all this book is a great read and a lot of fun, I highly recommend it for anyone who has an interest in either military or science fiction.

Review
"Sincero brings a fun, feminine verve to now well-tread self-help tropes. . . . The tone is far more feisty than academic, and there's humor on every page, all of which is exactly what her intended audience most needs." ---Publishers Weekly

Good writing but limited perspective
By Mac
Jen Sincero is a talented writer, and her edgy, irreverent style will be inspiring and motivational to many readers. If you've read other self help books then you probably won't find much that's new here. In fact, it's really the in-your-face tone and humor in her writing that makes this book worthwhile. As for her ideas, I personally found a lot to take issue with. First, she has a very polarized view of spiritual growth that divides our lives in to those that suck and those that are awesome. Maybe that works for young millennials just starting out in life, and if that's the audience she’s g oing for, then great, but most of us are somewhere on a continuum and her assertions that life is either this way or that way are simplistic to say the least. Sincero also uses a lot of highly critical, edgy language to describe people who are struggling or stuck - therefore not as awesome as she is - using words like "lame-o " "suck" "wuss" ...well, you get the idea. This may be mildly amusing the first time around, but it gets old fast and it's not exactly kind to those who may really be struggling. I have to confess that I question a writer who continually references her own life choices and personal career success as a model that the rest of us should follow. There is an exhibitionistic, narcissistic, "look at me", "look at how successful I am" dimension running through this book that is self-indulgent while lacking insight about what success could mean or look like for another person. Read this book for a quick shot of motivation if that's what you need, it's good for that, but look elsewhere for help in developing your own ideas and values about success and purpose. This is the Jen Sincero version and it may not apply to you.

NOT for people with Depression. Be warned. Very triggering.
By Lauren Cutrone
Okay, listen up. I ADORED this book. I subscribed to everything she said. I was literally prepared to go out and buy three more volumes for my friends.
Until Chapter 17.
About halfway through the book, Sincero begins talking about excuses. Okay, yes. A valuable thing to discuss. People, myself included, make excuses all the time. But she decides to target a set group of people.
People who are clinically depressed. She says, and I'm paraphrasing here, that depression is a comfort because it gives those who suffer from it an excuse not to do anything but stay in bed.
...
And that is precisely when I tuned out. I went from loving everything she said to eye rolling in a matter of seconds.
My clinical depression is not an excuse. It isn't me being lazy. It isn't me snickering as I back out on plans I make with friends. It's me literally being unable to do anything because my disease is keeping me from doing it. There are days where I can't do anything at all. There are days where laundry piles up and my bedroom becomes a disaster and I hide away from the world because I don't think I'm worthy of being seen. There are days where I stop seeing my friends because I feel like I'm a burden to them.
And my friends understand this. They know what I go through and they know that if I need some time to myself to get my brain under control, then it isn't an excuse. It doesn't mean I don't love them. It means that I'm just dealing with negative thoughts and I need to work through it. The fact that Sincero completely misunderstands depression ruined this book for me instantly. Yes, I will admit she gives valuable advice. But once I figured out that her advice disvalues someone like me, I checked out.
Also, her advice...is highly privileged. She says things like, "If you can afford this book, then you're doing okay." "Just buy the car of your dreams!" "If you want to travel the world, stop making excuses and you can." Some people...can't do that. Don't get me wrong, I'm in a good place right now but a year ago? I could barely pay my student loans. I couldn't afford to replace the khakis that were part of my work uniform. I ate leftovers for days on end because my paycheck wasn't going far enough. I didn't blame the universe for this. And I certainly didn't spend beyond my means just because I thought 'the universe owes me and will figure it out.' Sometimes, you're just in a s***ty place in life. I was in a s***ty place for three and a half years. Going out and spending money on a trip around the world isn't exactly sound advice for everyone. I felt like Sincero was speaking to one small group of clients. I didn't fit within that group.
Like I said, she does say some really nice things. She did build me up for quite a few chapters. But she dropped me instantly and it hurt. Depression is hard enough. People with depression shouldn't hear that it's an 'excuse.' I was highly offended and if I wasn't so far in the book, I would've stopped reading altogether.
Needless to say, I'm pretty glad to be done with this one.

If you subscribe to "wish craft" and the Secret you will enjoy this book and it may point you in more ...
By J. Milivojevic
I will be the dissenting voice here. This is basically a repackaging of "the Secret" philosophy that I just don't agree with. The idea that you can get WHATEVER you want by just VIBRATING at the RIGHT level just doesn't make sense to me..it also places the blame on you (if you're not getting everything you want in life you're just not vibrating on the right level). Please. Yes there are powerful forces in the universe but I don't believe we control everything...such a Western omniscient POV. If you subscribe to "wish craft" and the Secret you will enjoy this book and it may point you in more positive direction.
