Like the first two editions, there are detailed plans describing the construction of a Wimhurst machine. This edition however, details a more simplified but larger and improved version than previously described. There is also now an entire chapter devoted to Van de Graff generators describing the principles of operation, construction, modifications for improvement, and making accessories. There are many illustrations and photos describing the construction of these generators as well as methods for making electroscopes, large capacitors, and an electrophorus. There are many tips and tricks revealed that show how to make various parts like high-voltage corona spheres, shorting rods, and terminals. Other topics include electrostatic motors, cold light, levitation, exploding wire experiments, and historical notes on unusual electric discharges. A revised bibliography and materials supplier list also made in this new edition.

There are some useful things but I have seen better books on that topic.

It's okay but the illustrations are pretty bad. I use to do a lot of technical drawings and even for me that book is not easily understandable.

Nicely done book on electrostatics

There's a lot of material floating around the web and bookstores that deals with Tesla and related topics. However, when it comes to good old fashion electro-statics, there is no where near the same volume of information. In fact, I've found four books pretty much cover the field -- at least for my money. Something to consider when contemplating a purchase of books on niche subjects such as electrostatics, books tend to go out of print rather fast. The print runs are small, and often the author or publisher will not reprint. This means, get the book while you can. It might be oop and only available on the secondary collectors market later.

Homemade Lightning (R.A. Ford) -- If you are interested in putting together an electrostatic device, this is the book for you. Lots of how-to with pictures and explanation. I think as a first book this is your best bet. And as a book for creating running examples, this is your best bet. However, I don't believe I would want to have just one book on the subject. The other three books mentioned below add their own dimension to the subject and are (in my opinion) worth the few dollars needed to create a mini-library on the subject.

Electrostatic Experiments (G.W. Francis) -- The subtitle for this book is "An encyclopedia of early electrostatic experiments, demonstrations, devices, and apparatus." The book lives up to its name. A great book for an overview of the field. I know it sounds a little silly, but the nice bright white paper and crisp illustrations are a real boon to this book. The font is well chosen and the leading is easy to read. In this book you will find reference to odd-ball experiments that other books just don't get around to talking about. For example, Eggs illuminated. (p.200) and Illumination of oranges (p.201). If you are looking for demonstrations or ideas for creating new displays for lecture or theater, this book has plenty of inspiration.

Electrostatics (A.D. Moore) -- A nice home experiments how-to book. The book is a little chatty in parts. I liked this. The author speaks with a direct, sitting across the table, style.

Static Electricity (J.H. Pepper) -- This material is extracted fom Cyclopaedic Science Simplified 1889. I use this for historical reasons and to poke around in. The book since it was written in 1889 assumes a fair degree of background by the reader. Great pictures and some nice explanations of how things work. You just need to be able to penetrate the older text.

Packed with info, could use more on dangers, yes, dangers

The book has great info, but read a lot more then this before implementing. Dangers exist with Hi Pressure, DC voltages. Science can be fun but a fully charged 1 quart Lyden Jar, or a 2 liter plastic soda bottle Lyden Jar will knock you down. It can be lethal. Read, then read again, don't experiment alone and make sure everyone can do CPR(having number for EMTS is good too). When they tell you make your own lightening, remember the dangers of lightening. Other then that, there are process' that are downright dangerous just to make, (electrophorus). The finished product is safe enough(maybe), but the process of manufacture is tricky and dangerous.
Other then that 5 stars, great, you will develope respect for that "Humble" foot dragging on the rug static snap you give the dog on his nose. You will understand why they ground your car at toll booths, before you hand the person at the booth.
Finally this book IS NOT for children. High Schooler Seniors maybe. BUT WITH SUPERVISION, CLOSE SUPERVISION, a Lab setting is preferential, with fire extinguishers, First Aiders and people who can tell if you are about to reach X-Ray Potentials.

Great deal for a great book

This book I used to raise my son and teach him not what the world teaches today, but to teach him what was right and why it was right. The most uplifting stories I have read.

when I had a chance to read this book it grabed me instantly with the very first story. all the stories have such an uplifting and spiritual awareness to them like no other stories I have ever enjoyed. All the stories deal with the inner strugle that all people must endure and how a few find their way through these ordeals.

This is a book of wonderful short stories. Each of the stories gives us clues from the classic spiritual traditions about how to make REAL progress on the spiritual path. Bo Lozoff has made each of the characters someone I could identify with despite the characters very different backgrounds. We have all felt despair, fear, shame, sadness. These stories help us find The Way to the ultimate triumph in our lives of true joy and happiness.
I have read all of Bo Lozoff's books and to me each one,including LINEAGE AND OTHER STORIES, is a jewel in a crown of truly great spiritual books.

Bo Lozoff is awesome!!! His book "It's a Meaningful Life, It Just Takes Practice" is one of the best books I have ever read, and his other books tie in nicely with that. I would highly recommend ALL of his writings to anyone who is interested in seeking a higher spiritual plane.

Excellent, Well-Researched and Very Helpful Book!

I have read 50+ books on narcissistic personality disorder, narcissistic abuse, domestic abuse, trauma, PTSD, etc. This book is one of the best. Ms. Arabi is an excellent, thorough and insightful researcher and journalist. She lays the groundwork for recovery by explaining the impact of narcissistic abuse, synthesizing those truths with provocative insights from leading scholars and then offering practical suggestions and methods of recovery.

This book is extremely well-documented and well-researched. Arabi not only addresses NPD and narcissistic abuse but delves into PTSD/CPTSD, citing the works of renowned experts such as Judith Herman, M.D., author of the foundational book “Trauma and Recovery,” and Patrick Carnes, Ph.D. (“The Betrayal Bond”). She also ties in the work of Bessel van der Kolk M.D., who in his book “The Body Keeps the Score” reveals how trauma rewires the the brain, along with dozens of other sources, both classic and contemporary.

Each chapter of Arabi’s book features an impressive endnotes section as well as links to articles, podcasts and social media resources. She manages to combine all these sources into a comprehensive and revealing look at narcissistic abuse and its effects on the survivor. She then offers practical tips and alternatives for recovering from the trauma of narcissistic abuse. I was personally inspired and motivated by her creative recommendations for recovery – I even surprised myself by experimenting with the guided meditation links and redoubling my commitment to doing Zumba four times a week. Interesting read..

I've been reading a lot about narcissism after encountering it first in a patient's mom then recognizing it in my own mom and also seeing some of it in my siginificant other and now in myself. While some narcissists are truly monsters, often others develop it as a result of abuse/neglect in reaction to criticism and/or lack of love & validation. One excerpt reads: "They are never satisfied and they will constantly blame you for their dissatisfaction. They will never be satisfied with what they have, unless they have a complete doormat that turn a blind eye to their affairs, crimes and indiscretions. And even when they do have that doormat, they end up abusing and exploiting that person regardless, treating that person with contempt for being so “foolish” to believe in them. You’re damned if you do and damned if you do when it comes to a narcissistic partner."
And I would like to offer some insight: it is true that they are never satisfied and you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. They are unable to have self-acceptance, which gives rise the construction of the false self ego. It was taught that they are never good enough resulting in receiving criticism. They need a 'doormat' to give them the love and acceptance they lack for themselves and never received in childhood. However, they hate themselves so much that they resent (exploit/abuse) you if you give it, because you must be a fool to think they deserve love and/or acceptance--'Can't you see I'm a monster?! Can't you see how much of a worthless piece of trash I am? You're an idiot for thinking I deserve to be loved, because love does not exist-- only power. If love existed I would not feel forced to manipulate you to get the what I was never given freely (e.g. attention, love, validation, etc.) Relationships are about power not connecting.' They were taught early on that relationships are essentially unsafe. Feelings meant vulnerability, so it's safer to get one's needs met via manipulation--Why would you allow the "caretaker" (the one that criticizes, belittles) to have power over you by having emotions? Doesn't it feel more rewarding when you learn to manipulate and control the caretaker enemy and make them pay for the way the treated you? If you can control your emotions, you can learn not to be at the mercy of them and feel hurt, rejected, and powerless. Narcs are extraordinary sensitive to ego insults due to the lack of love/acceptance and use devaluation as a way to deal with the insults/injury. It's safer not to feel. Although their maladaptive ways keep them safe, they are extremely unhappy with their inability to form loving relationships. But they do not believe loving relationships exist and it is hard to seek, miss, or value what one never had--especially when it means subjecting yourself to feel hurt and disappointment again and to lose the sense of power that protected you (but now impairs you). It is an extremely emotionally immature disposition, but they received the message early that love and loving attention wasn't give freely making them believe manipulation is the only alternative. I read somewhere that codependency and narcissism are flip sides of the same coin. It doesn't sound right, but as a codependent/counterdependent with narcissistic tendencies, it makes sense. The child innately believes he/she is good, but the parents send an opposing message. Both the narcissist and codependent internalize the negative message, but the narcissist develops a false ego and rebels, while the codependent enmeshes in an attempt to win approval. Both of their egos depends upon another to exist, since their sense of Self is never developed due to the abuse/neglect.

I desperately needed to know how to stop the crazy love roller-coaster, and to understand why I still love the narcissist who was destroying my life. I devoured this book... twice in the couple of days that I've had it. I don't want to think of myself as a victim or my spouse as an abusive person, but the author very clearly explains the cycles and patterns and how to end the insanity. By going full no contact in just a couple of days I feel so much more in control of my life, hopeful and maybe even a little powerful.
There is hope and you're not crazy.... I highly recommend this book!

Price, a senior writer at Sports Illustrated since 1994, is the author of three previous books: Heart of the Game; Pitching Around Fidel, which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; and Far Afield, which Esquire named one of the top five reads of 2007. A in depth look a special football town

PLAYING THROUGH THE WHISTLE by SL Price is a comprehensive history of the town of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania told from two perspectives: J&L Steel, a thriving company that supplied wars and created structure integrity for metal works across the US and high school football; such a small town and yet one of the most such programs in the country winning countless titles and putting many young men into college and beyond.
A small town outside of Pittsburgh, Aliquippa was created to provide housing for the workers at J&L Steel and was laid out into sections, or plans as they called it, which immediately created class and ethnic divisions in the town. Price revisits those divisions throughout the book and discovers that while the schism between neighborhoods is always present, that when comes to football team, the town Aliquippa quickly and proudly unites. From World War II to today, S.L. Price layers the chronology of J&L Steel rise and eventual collapse on top of the rise of Aliquippa football program and postulates on how the two of them correlate to each other. As the book moves forward in time, several theories on why the Aliquippa high football team is so successful are looked at, including coaching, the desire to get out of Aliquippa, amongst others. At times in the book, following all of the names and their relationships to each other was challenging and some of the nuances of the steel industry was lost on me. The reliving of some of the football highlights, told from many of the men who were a part of them, were great fun to read and made me want to meet everyone from Aliquippa who once playing for their home team.
It's obvious to me that S.L. Price cares about Aliquippa and all of its residents and truly wanted to understand what make the town and their football team tick and it shows in the care with which the book is written. I enjoy reading about high school sports and I found PLAYING THROUGH THE WHISTLE to be one of the better choices.
