About the Author

Rick Graziani teaches computer science and computer networking courses at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California. Rick has worked and taught in the computer networking and information technology field for almost 30 years. Prior to teaching, Rick worked in IT for various companies including Santa Cruz Operation, Tandem Computers, and Lockheed Missiles and Space Corporation. He holds an M.A. in computer science and systems theory from California State University Monterey Bay. Rick also does consulting work for Cisco and other companies. When Rick is not working, he is most likely surfing. Rick is an avid surfer who enjoys longboarding at his favorite Santa Cruz surf breaks.

Allan Johnson entered the academic world in 1999 after 10 years as a business owner/operator to dedicate his efforts to his passion for teaching. He holds both an M.B.A. and an M.Ed. in occupational training and development. He is an information technology instructor at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 2003, Allan began to commit much of his time and energy to the CCNA Instructional Support Team, providing services to Networking Academy instructors worldwide and creating training materials. He now works full time for the Academy in Learning Systems Development.

4. in my opinion you need this book to study for the final exam because you wo'nt always have access to the net plus have all the packet tracer labs on CD is an even better backup.

need Packet Tracer

Another reviewer remarked negatively about the so-called poor quality of the paper in the book. I simply do not see this with my copy. The pages are high quality and quite reflective, without being actually glossy. In the printing business, there are grades of paper quality, and while I'm not in that field, the pages are certainly not low grade.

As to the actual contents on those pages :) -

It looks like comprehensive coverage. Remember that this is a Cisco produced book, for a Cisco certificate and where the hardware used is Cisco. So by definition, you are getting an authoritative reference for exam preparation. Unlike a third party offering [I don't know if these actually exist for this Cisco exam/certificate]. So to play it safe, if you are serious about getting the qualification, this text may be the best choice.

The book has many examples of how to configure and otherwise manage routing. Instead of merely passively reading the text, you should manually try all the examples. Well, to save you time, these have been included in the accompanying CD. Related to this is the single most important point in the book. You need the Packet Tracer simulator. This does not come with the book, which advises you to ask your instructor, who has to be part of the Cisco Networking Academies. If you are trying to learn the material strictly on your own, then this will be harder to assimilate, short of you having access to another simulator or an actual network where you have administrative permissions.

Having said that, a subsidiary role is possible for the book. If you already run a network, which might have Cisco hardware, and you need a solid reference on routing protocols, try using this. It explains the common protocols at a level deep enough and suitable for a network administrator. And of course, while the protocols are meant to be implemented the same way, regardless of vendor, when it comes to the diagnostic output from Cisco hardware, the book is relevant to what you should see.

Love the book

Love the book, highly recommend it. Very thorough former textbook exactly on subject of the title. Too bad the book must have been in a basement during a flood, it smelled so strongly of damp, though somewhat less now. But the book, which is mid 20th C., is still great for reference.

Goosebumps is still fun!

It's been a while since I visited the land of Goosebumps, and I was a little nervous that I wouldn't get the same feeling of delight and terror that I used to when reading these books, but as it happened, I loved it and it reminded me of why I adore R.L. Stine, and the Goosebumps books in general.

This story is a bit different than the usual fare, divided into three sections and different time periods. I liked the way this story went from one event many years ago to the present and yet kept the stories tied together in an easily understandable way.

As with previous titles from this author, the material is age appropriate and there is a strong sense of humour presented throughout the writing. I had a lot of fun with this, and I am positive that younger audiences will enjoy it. There are the expected chills and thrills and the story never slacked off or got boring.

The characters are fun and have a lot of personality. I liked the way the main character in the first section was closely tied to the main character in the second section. This book is not too long and not too short and will provide an older child with lots of reasons to want to continue reading this series.

I'm looking forward to the next book.

Watch Out For The Zombies!

I've been a fan of R. L. Stine's books since I was in grade school (and I'm nearly 33-years-old), so I was honored to review an uncorrected proof of Zombie Halloween. With this installment being a "Special Edition," it is a little longer than typical Goosebumps book and it is divided into three sections. The first section serves as a prequel set in 1944 and then it jumps to the present time for the latter sections. Considering how popular The Walking Dead is, I'm not surprised that R. L. Stine added some zombies into a Goosebumps tale. Overall, there is plenty of humor and thrills inside the pages of Goosebumps Most Wanted: Special Edition #1: Zombie Halloween that should satisfy any fan, young or old.

Silly scares and creepy twists made this a fantastic Halloween read

It’s a Goosebumps Halloween! Back in the day, I used to watch Goosebumps on tv and read the books – all in broad daylight and they still scared the bejeezus out of me (the ones with that living dummy gave me nightmares). They recently added the show to Netflix and I marathoned it in the days before Halloween this year (don’t judge me). I was completely surprised by how…cheesy it seems to me now, but cheesy in fun way. That’s how Zombie Halloween felt to me – cheesy, but in a fun, nostalgic way that totally brought me back to my childhood when Halloween was scary in that fun, innocent way.

In Zombie Halloween, 12-year-old Kenny, along with his family, have recently moved into Grandpa Mo’s old, dilapidated house, which happens to be located directly across the street from a creepy old graveyard. This close to Halloween, it seems everyone in town, from Grandpa Mo to Kenny’s new best friend Alec, are obsessed with zombies – a fact that Kenny and his twin sister plan to turn to their advantage by throwing a zombie-themed Halloween party to get to know the other kids from their new school. Kenny gets a bit sidetracked from party planning when an odd new neighbor moves in next door to Grandpa Mo’s, in a house also conveniently close to the graveyard. Suspiciously soon after, zombie sightings hit the local nightly news. Something strange is going on in this town, and when the adults won’t take him seriously, it seems like it’s up to Kenny, and his scaredy-cat sidekick Alec, to get the bottom of things.

This book was good, scary, age-appropriate fun. The publisher suggests an age rating at approximately 8 – 12 years old, and I say that sounds about right. While it’s still fun and scary enough for older kids to enjoy, it’s not too scary for those on the lower end of the age range. There is a tiny bit of gore, which is to be expected with zombies in play, so things like dangling eye-balls and exposed rib cages may be a bit much for some kids.

All and all, I really enjoyed this book, and not just for the nostalgia factor – silly scares and creepy twists made this a fantastic Halloween read.

Each year more than 50,000 people in the United States receive the diagnosis of a benign or malignant tumor of the head and neck. Head and neck cancers are usually curable when they are detected at an early stage, but all too many patients present with advanced lesions, from which they often die. Most survivors of advanced head and neck cancers have long-lasting sequelae that alter their ability to speak and swallow as well as their appearance. Even the treatment of benign head and neck neoplasms may engender considerable functional or cosmetic changes. Patients and their physicians often experience considerable anxiety during the planning of treatment for a head and neck tumor.

Benign lesions are usually adequately treated by surgery alone, as are many cancers of the head and neck. Some cancers are best controlled with radiation therapy as the primary treatment. Until recently, advanced head and neck tumors have most often been cured when treated with a combination of surgery and radiation therapy. In the past decade, increased attention has been devoted to curing head and neck tumors without surgery in an effort to limit tissue loss and the need for postoperative rehabilitation. Aggressive treatment schedules have been employed, and the use of cytotoxic chemotherapy in the initial management of head and neck cancers is under active investigation.

It is increasingly apparent that some advanced squamous-cell cancers of the head and neck may be controlled without surgery. However, it is by no means certain that the side effects of radiation therapy administered with curative intent (perhaps in concert with chemotherapy) are preferable to those of resection with modern techniques of reconstruction and postoperative radiation therapy. Progress in ablative and reconstructive surgery has dramatically reduced the functional loss and disfigurement once associated with the resection of head and neck cancers. The best way to approach tumors of the head and neck today is a subject of both research and debate.

Formidable tasks confront authors of textbooks on the treatment of head and neck tumors. Readers may come from many different disciplines and may be in various stages of training. Textbooks focused on one aspect, such as surgery, radiation therapy, or reconstruction, risk presenting too narrow an approach for a balanced treatment of debatable issues. They may be far too complex for most who consult the textbook. Broad surveys are almost invariably superficial. As the title suggests, the editors of Comprehensive Management of Head and Neck Tumors have confronted the problem with an approach designed to explain and explore different management possibilities with sufficient attention to detail. Generally addressing anatomical sites of disease, the sections usually include chapters covering pathology, clinical evaluation, surgical treatment and radiation, rehabilitation, and controversies surrounding the management of tumors affecting each part of the head and neck. These chapters are generally thorough, short of encyclopedic, and well referenced.

Part I, "General Considerations in the Management of Patients with Head and Neck Tumors," is nearly book-length and particularly strong. Individual chapters review topics ranging from anesthesia for head and neck surgery to rehabilitation. Interpretation of clinical research, the molecular biology of head and neck tumors, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and prevention of head and neck cancer are discussed in detail. Curiously, no single chapter deals directly with the principles and current practice of head and neck surgery.

Once attention turns to tumors at specific sites (covered in parts II through XII), additional strengths of the book emerge. Readers will find excellent reviews of pathology, with attention paid to clinical evaluation, surgical resection, radiation therapy, and rehabilitation. Most parts end with balanced chapters devoted to controversies in management. For tumors of the pharynx and larynx, the complex issues surrounding organ preservation (the effort to extirpate cancers without surgery) are covered particularly well. The depth of coverage of management issues is usually measured. There are occasional technical points, but this is a textbook, not a surgical atlas.

There are nearly 150 contributors, most of whom are recognized as experts in their fields. With so many authors, there are some distracting variations in style. Some chapters bear a disappointing resemblance to those of the 1987 edition. Because no chapter is devoted to the principles and practice of modern head and neck surgery, it will be difficult for many readers to place an iconoclastic 120-page chapter entitled "Controversies in Multimodality Therapy for Head and Neck Cancer: Clinical and Biological Perspectives" in its proper context.

With its unique scope, Comprehensive Management of Head and Neck Tumors will be an important reference book for medical libraries to obtain. Most residents and practitioners of head and neck surgery or radiation oncology will benefit from reading this textbook. It is a work of inestimable value to medical oncologists who treat head and neck cancer.

It's a good book for fungi identification

I have had very satisfactory experiences in the use of this book as a guide for the identification of Food Fungi, even though outside written for Fungi of Medical Importance. It displays a very particular approach that makes extremely didactic, mainly for the novices in the subject or that they do not make fungi identification of routine. It presents first a classification of the fungi based on the color of the colony and the characteristic formation of conidias of the fungi genera. In one second part of the book it makes a more detailed description of each one of the considered generas. And finally it makes an review of the main medias used in the isolation and identification of fungi.

It is a well written, and illustrated book for the idenfication of fungi, however, the inclusion of plates for appearance on media and more direct photos would improve the publication (and no doubt increase the cost) otherwise it is a good book for the identication of fungi in the laboratory that processes some fungi, as an offshoot to the microbiology department, a mycology department would include this in its library but would include other texts, and resources. In summary good at uni good on the bench, but would need suplementation in a pure mycology department.

Very useful when studying mycology, especially in a lab setting. Great for reference when identifying fungi on a plate. Features drawings and actual images of most fungi. Very descriptive cornmeal morphologies, and accurate descriptions of front and reverse color.

Great for planning ahead! There is so much to see outside of Reykjavik and expensive tourist stuff!

This is perfect for anyone who intends to visit and discover the island on their own at any point. This was purchased ahead of time so that we could plan out our driving and sight-seeing before traveling in hopes to get the most out of renting a vehicle there. Gas stations and major site-seeing places are marked (great for researching places unheard of ahead of time!). I'm not an avid hiker, but to me trails, camp sites, elevation is seems pretty handy for those who are. The best part about this map so far is that we can make permanent marks on it of all the places we want to visit with a sharpie and it stays even when exposed to water, but like whiteboards it can be erased using a dry-erase marker. Iceland can have very unpredictable weather and many blogs recommended water resistant items. Being laminated, I have no doubt this will hold up! I'll be sure to update if it fails!
