Outstanding exposition

I was introduced to this book by a talk that one of the authors (Arthur Benjamin) gave at the MAA Mathfest in Albuquerque in August of 2005. The talk was one of the very best mathematics talks that I've ever attended. Everyone in the audience could follow what was going on, and we all left with an understanding of the basic approach to combinatorial identities used in this book. The authors' approach is to prove combinatorial identities by defining a quantity and then obtaining different formulas for that quantity. One formula becomes the left hand side of an identity while another formula becomes the right hand side.

When I read the book I found that it was just as clearly written, with lots of beautiful examples.

This is a bargain

Clear and concise, Jack Appleman's guide is worth keeping close to you. Clean, spare explanations are followed by useful, useable exercises that bring home the lesson. No wonder it is a staple of business writers everywhere. It is an inexpensive, short read that pays back above average. Your return on invested time and money is superior. Recommended.

Some great tips but the book won't blow your mind

After reading this book for an MBA class I'm taking I would have to say it's a solid effort but not a life changing effort. There are some very good tips but the format of the book and the layout of the chapters don't flow too well. It's supposedly 10 steps but they don't seem to have to go in this specific order to write successfully. There were some good tips about using powerpoint. In summary, it's a good effort buy maybe not the best.

About the Author
From the author:

I have specialised in power system development and economics for the last 40 years having worked for a distribution company and as a senior manager with a generator (CEGB), a transmission company (NGC) and a manufacturer (ABB). Prior to liberalisation I worked on the development of algorithms to optimise system planning and operation which led to my playing a lead role in the restructuring of the UK power sector in 1990. In 1998 I set up as an independent consultant with a company called ‘Electricity Market Services Ltd’ and published a book on early experiences with Wiley called ‘Electricity Markets’. Since then I have worked on projects throughout the world. I have advised government agencies and regulators in Belgium, the UK, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Oman, Namibia and Abu Dhabi. I have analysed markets for clients covering the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Scandinavia, the Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan, Botswana and Mozambique. I have also undertaken assignments in the US, Trinidad and Tobago and Singapore, for banks in Europe, the World Bank and for oil and gas companies. This new book is based on the experience and understanding gained from this wide spectrum of assignments and international experience. It shows how power costs can be calculated and compares those from conventional sources with renewable and other alternatives. It also includes detailed calculations of distribution and transmission charges showing the makeup of end user charges and the impact of emission restrictions. Part three discusses the operation of markets and how they may be analysed while part four speculates on future developments. I was encouraged to write the book and record my understanding and experiences by universities and others who recognised the shortage of books in this area. I have included worked examples and endeavoured to keep abreast of the latest developments. The industry continues to face new challenges and it remains to be seen how well the market structures put in place will be able to deal with them.

I originally trained as a power systems engineer with a first in Electrical Engineering. I subsequently took a Diploma in management Studies and completed a PhD in electricity markets. I am a fellow of the IEE, a senior member of the American IEEE and a member of the British Institute of Management.

it might help if you know nothing about the power industry...

This book is awful, especially considering the price. If it cost $10-$15, I would probably bump it up to 2 or 3 stars. I've been doing modelling at an electric utility for less than a year and was able to learn absolutely nothing from this book. It's not that any of the information is wrong, it's just that it is so basic as to be of no help whatsoever to anyone who is even remotely involved in the industry. For example, on page 168, we are given the formula: Full Cost=Variable + fixed/MWh. Are you kidding me? $100 dollars and 160 pages and we're still in the first week of a freshman college course? What a disaster of a book...

A Comprehensive Treatment on The Fundamentals

This book fairly comprehensively covers the fundamentals of power markets and economics as asserted by its title. The focus is on United Kingdom and European Union electricity markets. It is now a bit dated from its publishing in 2009, for example ROCs (renewable obligation certificates) in 2015 and 2016 now seek to differentiate between renewable energy technologies. Never the less an in depth and comprehensive treatise of the important basics and yet requiring a lot of concentration to read and assimilate. It certainly would be great if the author Dr Barrie Murray would update it with a 2015 or better yet a 2016 edition. Given the esoteric nature of this topic, the seemingly high price of the book (US$128) is worth it in my view.

Gets an "F" for no formulary

I have several avian medicine/surgery books but was looking forward to a book on poultry for veterinarians. Generally a good and overall helpful book BUT - and this is a huge BUT, leading to a failing grade - there is no formulary! Indeed there is often no dose mentioned at all even though a drug of choice might be mentioned. For example, I looked up capillariasis today and the book mentions fenbendazole as a possible treatment but nowhere is the dose mentioned. Other drugs I looked up - similar lack of dosage.
There is an "abbreviated formulary" of fewer than 10 drug in reference to withdrawal times, which is nearly worthless.
Extremely disappointing. I would not have purchased this book had I known.

I hope this is not the end! I started the series because Alphas Rise was free on Amazon, and kept reading the rest thru Kindle Unlimited. Reveca's story is absolutely amazing and kept me in its grip thru to the last book! I recommend this book to anyone who loves action, suspense, love, betrayal, and bikers. I love the paranormal genre, and this series did not let me down. I hope to read more about Reveca and King and their kingdom, the fall of some of the old gods and the rise of the new and their reign.

About the Author
Gale Rhodes earned a B.S. in applied mathematics at North Carolina State University, and then a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of North Carolina. He is currently a professor of chemistry at the University of Southern Maine, Portland. His main duty, and first love, is teaching undergraduate biochemistry. He has received awards for outstanding teaching at three different colleges. His best known publication is the first edition of Crystallography Made Crystal Clear, which received very complimentary reviews in several journals. He has also published three book chapters, three book reviews, and about 30 articles on diverse subjects, including research articles in biochemistry, and articles on chemistry, science, and interdisciplinary education.

Buy "Biomolecular Crystallography"

Buy "Biomolecular Crystallography" instead. This book tries to condense too much information on too few pages. I didn't understand everything in "Biomolecular Crystallography", but the sections that I did understand, are very well written. It's more expensive, but it's a better book, for those that really want to understand crystallography beyond various tutorials on the internet and "Crystallography Made Crystal Clear".

Clear perhaps, accurate not

While Crystallography made Crystal Clear by Gale Rhodes is certainly easy to read, it oversimplifies things and introduces a few inaccuracies. It falls short to make the student really understand crystallography, which, in my opinion, is not a good thing for a textbook. On the other hand, I have made the experience that, unfortunately, many students are happy with only a superficial knowledge of the basic theory (I have been teaching crystallography for about a decade now) and this book helps with this attitude.

My advice: if you just want to pass the class and don't care about the subject, go with this book. If, however, you really want to understand what crystallography is about, you need to read either the great beginner's book by Werner Massa: Crystal Structure Determination or the more protein crystallography oriented but equally great beginners book by Jenny Glusker and Kenneth Trueblood: Crystal Structure Analysis -- A Primer. Once you have digested the Massa or the Glusker/Trueblood, you can work your way through the book edited by Carmelo Giacovazzo: Fundamentals of Crystallography.

After reading and understanding the Massa or Glusker/Trueblood and the Giacovazzo, you'll be ready to survive a discussion with any crystallographer any time. (What is more: you will enjoy the discussion!) The book by Gale Rhodes, however, will only get you over the exam and you'll miss out on the great fun crystallography can be.

A new edition of the Glusker Trueblood has come out: Crystal Structure Analysis: A Primer. The classic has been brought up-to-date and there really is no excuse any more for reading any other introductory textbook than the Glusker/Trueblood. Especially not the book by Gale Rhodes.
