Great resource!

I've worked with middle school students on and off since 2002, and I really enjoy kids during this stage of life. But, if you've ever worked with junior high students before, you know they're a strange breed. It took me a while to figure out how to relate to the guys in my small group. Once I did, though, I really loved getting to know them and teach them about Christ. I also didn't realize how some seemingly insignificant things I did at the time would make a lasting impact on these students' lives. In fact, I think it'd be honest to say that just about everything I learned about kids this age came from observation and interaction, but it took a long time.

The authors of Middle School Ministry are veteran youth pastors and they describe the book as really being two books in one. The first part is all about the psychological, physical, and developmental changes taking place during early adolescence. The second part contains practical strategy for doing youth ministry with this age group. As I read, I found myself agreeing with most of the conclusions that the authors made and wishing that someone had given me a similar book (this one was first published last year) when I had started working with middle school students years ago; it would have saved me from a lot of wondering, some annoyances, and many the struggles of figuring out how to react to certain weird things that students tend to do as they navigate this important stage of life.

What I really appreciated about this book is that it went beyond the typical rhetoric that can go like this: Junior high students have B.O., so it takes a special person to work with them. Also, we need to make sure they're kept safe from worldly temptation as they begin to navigate their teen years, so youth group needs to be a safe place. Don't get me wrong; I think youth group does need to be a safe place (and I do realize junior high boys sometimes have a problem with B.O.), but youth ministry is about shepherding students into a growing relationship with Jesus, and showing them how to make good life choices. To do these things, we must practice incarnational ministry - meeting students where they are. Oestreicher and Rubin get this, and that's the driving passion behind this book - helping youth pastors and volunteers disciple students as part of the local church. They understand that the youth in the church are not just the church's future, but they're also a part of the church's present.

So, if you work with or are considering working with junior high students in a youth ministry setting, I recommend this book. Even if you think you know it all when it comes to youth ministry, I believe you'll get something worthwhile out of this resource.

EXCELLENT!

If you work with middle schoolers, this book is a must. I've just finished it and am planning on getting one for every volunteer worker on my staff. You can tell both writers have had tons of experience and have spent lots of time studying to make this as helpful as possible.

The book is divided into two sections. The first deals mostly with how middle schoolers develop. How we can view their brain and body development and that shapes how we can minister to them. The second half of the book focuses more on practical ideas related to teenage ministry... ie. lessons, outing, building a staff.

I can't begin to tell you how beneficial this book has already proven to be in my ministry. I have already begun implementing some of the strategies laid out in the book.

The one down side? What's with all the parentheses? Goodness there seems to be some in every paragraph. But I know that is me being nitpicky. Enjoy the read!

This is an incredible stride forward from a wonderful artist.

This is an incredible stride forward from a wonderful artist. I first encountered Brown with his Andre the Giant bio-comic, and was delighted by his clean, simple linework and storytelling abilities. I've now accumulated everything I can find of his, and this book marries his style with an incredibly cohesive story (which would frankly be dull to read about in prose form). Top recommendation.

In the world of computer games, one game stands out in the minds of all early gamers: Tetris. This perplexingly addictive and habit forming game, was, at least for me, played for the first time on an original Gameboy (which I still own and play… occasionally). This was long after I heard about the cutthroat negotiations, the lawsuits and the PC version. Alexey Pajitnov, since, has become a household name in the gaming industry, even though most of the profit from the game went to the former USSR.

A mathematician and computer scientist, at the Moscow Academy of Science, he was originally charged with creating psychology emulators, like ELIZA so many decades ago, but his love and fascination with the human thought process and games lead him to create one of the arguably, most successful games of all times. Enter Tetris by Box Brown. In the truest form of the medium of graphic novels, Brown takes this thought process to that of art, psychology and games, and the remarkable history behind Tetris.

Written largely in the third person expository style, Tetris tells a story, not about just people, but about governments, businesses and the litigation involved in the corporate structure. It never wavers too far from Pajitnov, but rather dips in and out of his life as the ‘human interest’ aspect of the story. And it is a story to tell. From its humble beginnings in the mind of the artist to the push to publish, through corporate nightmares, to the intervention of the Soviet State, to the back-stabbing deals and loopholes, and corporate lawsuits, all leading back to the author of this humble game, Tetris captures this all and keeps it relevant.

This is a tall order for a graphic novel, but Brown gets around it fine, disclosing the material at an easily digestible rate with little room for speculation. Throughout the novel, we are introduced to new characters in this real life drama that played a key hold in Tetris’ development. All in all, the writing is informative, yet personal at the same time, and is a treasure trove of information about the history behind this famous game. Readers don’t really get into the minds of anyone but Alexey, as characterization is not what is important here. Because the text is focused solely on the tale of the game, so to speak, the graphic novel bypasses character in lieu of content.

Artistically, Tetris is minimalist, with a constant medium shot perspective, that allows you to soak up the information visually, as well as via expository. It very much resembles a documentary, key scenes being drawn, while less important ones left out. The graphic flow is easily read, as the dialogue boxes are tactfully placed, and it basically follows a six panel grid layout. The eye wanders to the action at hand, and never has to search for the appropriate visual cues. It’s a well-drawn piece of work, and should appeal to aficionados of art comics or autobiographical ones. The art well suits the material, which, if I must be honest, is quite dry without it. Together, art and words do a serendipitous job where either one would fail miserably.

Overall, fans of the game or who have an interest in the game should pick this up. It’s well worth it. As a side bonus you also get a history of Nintendo, the former gaming console giant, but the main course is the pure, unadulterated history of one of the world’s most notorious games.

THE Game

I'm not into graphic novels, but when a nonfiction subject was presented in this format (and the opportunity to get it signed), I was intrigued. Learning about the whole convoluted history of a game I grew up playing was interesting, as well as the history of how playing games evolved (frontal cortex simulation). The illustrations were helpful keeping the various characters straight as Tetris's popularity grew outside of the USSR. With all of the various companies attempting to acquire rights for different countries and formats, the whole phenomenon spiraled out of control. And the poor creator Alexey basically got shafted by his government. There were some fascinating tidbits regarding Gameboy revolutionizing handheld gaming and the pissing match between Atari and Nintendo. The text itself was very simple, but the overall story was delivered in a captivating way. It's a quick read about the history of a pop culture icon.

WOW! Hard to imagine a book withe more disparate intersections of key themes in 20th century US AND ALSO international history!

This book has a labor-history focus that transcends traditional breaks between diplo and social history. The title does not capture the book's incredible scope and synthesis. WOW! People should, IMO, get this book now.

WOW! Hard to imagine a book withe more disparate intersections of key themes in 20th century US AND ALSO international history! The only book I could compare it to is the incredible Thy Will Be Done: Nelson Rockefeller, Evangelism, and the Conquest of the Amazon in the Age of Oil, a title which ALSO completely fails to capture the essence of its intersections. That and of course, the best book yet written on the history of the US National Security State, JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters, a book that Charlie Rose censored from PBS when RFK Jr. held it up in Dallas, January 11, 2013.

Among other things this book helps you understands key buried Big Inch and Little Inch moments that run through the history of the 20th century Democratic Party. There is too much money to be made in our not seeing this longer term view, so this book is necessary.

An Account with Does Not Recognize The Long Term Diplomatic Brilliance of the House of Saud

Most accounts of the establishment of the Saudi oil bonanza, and this one in particular, concentrate on the manipulative power of Aramco and the U.S. government in bringing a sweet deal to American investors and creating an unequall alliance between the United States and Saudi Arabia. They analyze a transaction that unfolded over three quarters of a century in terms of colonial aggrandizement by the west and articulately the United States. This although Saudi Arabia was never colonized, and eventually nationalized its supposed colonizer (Aramco) on favorable terms.

These accounts consistently fail to grasp is the brilliance that the Saudis, and especially Ibn Saud, demonstrated in the long dance which brought such great wealth to Saudi Arabia. The Saudi kingdom was politically fragile and militarily weak. It completely lacked the financial and technical ability to locate and develop its resource. Their choices were the British, who they had previously found unreliable, the French, the Dutch and the Americans. The French and the Dutch were pitifully weak financially, militarily and technologically compared to the Americans. And with the Americans they could deal with Aramco, a private corporation, which was an independent force not directed or controlled by the American government. Indeed, through Aramco, the Saudis could influence American policy in ways they never could have achieved directly. In addition Aramco delivered the goods technologically and financially, and was an ideal temporary instrument for the Saudis to increase their leverage and power through their oil resource.

The winner in this elaborate game was Saudi Arabia. It's success in the world oil market is due in part to the richness of the resource that is located in their country. But it is also due to a very wise and patient conduct of a long game by the leaders of the country, especially Ibn Saud, who had learned this craft well dealing with the British before, during and immediately after World War I. Ibn Saud is one of the most successful statesmen of the 20th Century. In the long run, he got exactly what he wanted from the American government and one of the world's most powerful corporations.

Insight into the forces that have shaped U.S. relations with the Middle East

"America's Kingdom" by Robert Vitalis is a deeply fascinating history of the U.S. in Saudi Arabia in the mid 20th century. Mr. Vitalis, who is an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, seeks to correct the mythmaking that has obscured the real story for far too long, dedicating many years of research to this project. The result is an exacting piece of scholarship that produces remarkable insight into the forces that have shaped U.S. relations with the Middle East.

The book is divided into two parts. The first section focuses on the labor practices of ARAMCO in Saudi Arabia. Mr. Vitalis astutely compares and contrasts the industrial practices of other U.S.-based extractive industries to find that ARAMCO simply imposed upon its Saudi clients what had already been learned elsewhere: namely, to divide and conquer the local labor force; control the political process; and extract maximum profits. In this particular case, of course, Mr. Vitalis details how ARAMCO's efforts were fully supported by a U.S. government intent on pursuing its geopolitical ambitions on the world stage, in which the control of oil played no small part.

The second part tells the story of worker struggle, politics and power. Debunking the myths that had been carefully constructed by corporate public relations professionals and sympathetic government officials, Mr. Vitalis decisively shows how worker's rights were gained by popular struggle and not from enlightened corporate policies. Through Mr. Vitalis' engrossing narrative, we see how American interests came to ally itself ever more closely with the Kingdom as a means to ensuring a steady flow of oil and projecting American power into the region.

Throughout the text, the reader is introduced to a cast of sometimes colorful characters ranging from labor agitators, royalists, secret CIA operatives, Soviet double agents and more. Mr. Vitalis excels at uncovering obscure source documents that help him weave these players into the narrative and bring history to life. While there is no doubt that the overall thrust of the book is towards a high degree of historical accuracy, profound insight and professionalism, the character profiles and world-shaping events that are narrated by Mr. Vitalis result in a suprisingly readable and informative account.

I highly recommend this exceptional book to educated readers who have a keen interest in 20th century American and Middle Eastern history.

Another great read from a talented author.

This was a really great book with two emotionally raw, extremely passionate characters.

Sadie was the most appealing character to me in this book. Don't get me wrong, Elias was super sexy and wonderful but Sadie really shined.

If I had to describe her in one word it would be brave. Everything she experiences is completely new to her as shes had a very sheltered childhood, but she's not afraid.
She faces these new feelings, and experiences head on. Sadie is not the shy, weak, naive girl who blushes at every kind word thrown her way. She also sees the mistakes that others around her have made and she learns from them. She's a smart girl who has the ability to bring a man to his knees....literally. She's essentially the best type of female lead character.
The authors note stated that this book will have a sequel. I'm a fan of sequels and can totally see the appeal to a second book. It's not necessarily that there are unresolved issues, it's just that there is clearly more story to tell. Even secondary characters some serious issues that could use some fleshing out.

Also, at the end of this book is an excerpt for Masterpiece. I'm looking forward to this book AS WELL AS a sequel to one of my top 5 favorite series EVER the BILLIONAIRE!

This story is about Sadie. She just graduated from a very strict catholic boarding school where she was stifled her entire life. Sadie wants to go to Nashville and become the next big thing. What she doesn't realize is that her fling is the current big thing. The sex is definitely hot and heavy between these two. Sadie epitomizes young and horny and frankly, I hated that for her. She has prime examples in her house about what happens when you don't use your brain...at least a little bit. I know she's young, but...ack. I would rather have seen her character as horny, but smart rather than flighty and way, way too blonde. She gives blondes a bad name.

I love that she's a musician and seems to truly have talent. I love that Elias has the connections to help her get someplace quick, but I hate how completely naive she is and wish she had been just a bit tougher and more forward-thinking. If that had been the case, I think I really could have loved this book.

For my rating on this book, this is one of those, 'It's not you, it's me' situations. I think I'm simply over the 18 yo virgin who's up for anything even though she has no clue. I could have really loved this book without the over the top sexual escapades and focus, because I did truly enjoy the story behind it. But the author wanted to go with erotic romance and while I love a good erotic story, this one just didn't quite do it for me on that side of it.

And no, the story is definitely not over. But for me, I think I'm okay with being done with these characters.

This is the best series of spelling workbooks that I've found!

As a homeschooling mom, teaching multiple grades, this book is perfect! I have purchased 3 other spelling books in the past, all of which had layouts that I really didn't care for and my children found unclear and boring. I always wound up making my own worksheets. I was a little nervous buying this one, and worried that it would be another dud, but in fact, it is wonderful. It has a very clear design that breaks down the lessons very well. It gives the kids wonderful practice that they enjoy. I couldn't be happier that I have finally found a great spelling book series for my kids. And it has saved me a ton of time!

Until now, nothing seems to help my son with spelling. However, he really likes this book. His enjoyment of it goes A LONG WAY in the effort to help him. He likes the system and therefore doesn't dread doing his spelling. Thank you

A great spelling program for individual levels.

A nice spelling workbook that I use in my classroom where each student is on a different spelling level. It offers common grade level spelling words with practice and various activities. It also offers a master copy of each spelling list that you can copy and give to students to study off of. I have used these books with my students for 8 years and I will continue to use them.
