Last Impressions (The Marnie Baranuik Files) (Volume 3), by A.J. Aalto

When an FBI Internal Affairs investigation lands the Preternatural Crimes Unit in a bureaucratic spank-fest, it feels like the perfect time for Marnie Baranuik to skip town and lend her expertise to a bear-sized Canadian cop who doesn't want her help with his case, his love life, or his car stereo. Back in her childhood stomping grounds, Marnie leaps into action, facing an exorcist in skinny jeans, a slap-happy specter, and an old friend up to new tricks. Are ghosts behind a string of unusual deaths? Why didn't her revenant companion, Lord Harry Dreppenstedt, tell her he had a Combat Butler? Can she survive dinner with her parents? With a shifty man of the cloth offering her soul's redemption, and a revelation that could change the future of her love life, she has her gloved hands full. She may not make a great first impression, but no one makes a Last Impression quite like Marnie.

About the Author
.J. Aalto is a proud native of the Niagara Region. Born in St. Catharines, she currently resides in Thorold, Ontario with her wonderfully peculiar husband Jason and two quirky kids, a puppy that drives her bonkers and two cats who are undoubtedly plotting her demise. When not writing horror or dark urban fantasy, you can find A.J. researching horrible things, braying her unladylike guffaw, making dick jokes, mentally undressing strangers or sitting cross-legged on her front porch eating peanut butter M&Ms by the spoonful.

Another great installment!
By Jocelyn
Last Impressions is the third installment in the Marnie Baranuik Files series and it's a winner just as the first and second installments are.

Aalto's writing voice is humorous, sassy, witty and descriptive and yeah, there's quite a bit of wonderfully colorful profanity sprinkled throughout--most of which is provided by Marnie, the heroine. She can turn a cuss-phrase like nobody's business and it never fails to crack me up.

Within the pages of Last Impressions, you'll be treated to characters such as an old-school gentlemanly Revenant (Vampire), a hard-assed FBI agent who is the lust of Marnie's loins, mentions of a bunny-slipper-humping vampire bat, ghosts, a cock whisperer, a perverted ex-priest/exorcist, a knitting Canadian cop, a combat butler and Marnie's googly-eyed frog hat.

One scene in Last Impressions made me sleep with a light on. Seriously. Reading about dead people water is scary at night.

In summation, Last Impressions and the rest of the Marnie Baranuik Files urban fantasy series, is rife with witty banter, spooky to downright scary scenes, lust, fantastic world-building, lots of humor, great plotting and vivid description. If you're not reading The Marnie Baranuik Files, you are missing out on some good s***!

Marnie goes to Canada, eh.
By meigan
Two words: cock-whisperer. Surprisingly, since this IS Marnie's world, it's not what you think.

Entering the world of Marnie Baranuik is a guaranteed good time. Each time I finish a book in this series, I ask myself how Aalto will top this one because they are just that good. And genius that AJ Aalto is, she manages to make each new book better than the previous, which is a tough beast to master. Well, call her the beast masterer, because she does it every time.

In this installment, Marnie finds herself on a case in her home turf of Canada. She invited herself, of course, after receiving a phone call about a missing woman who has a certain tie to Marnie. Luckily (or begrudgingly), she is welcomed by Thag/Longshanks/Constable Patrick Schenk, and together they work to solve a mystery involving ghosts, possible malevolent spirits, and a pervy priest/exorcist who also trains dogs. If that doesn't sound like some weird and fine reading, I don't know what does.

I absolutely adored Longshanks, he was a perfect partner for Marnie this time around. His patience and surprising understanding of Marnie really made them compatible, and with him being so prominent, I barely missed Batten (and his creepy 'stash). Batten stayed behind in Colorado to cultivate his new lip hair and watch Wes and another "guest". I also liked how Marnie being around Schenk really brought out her 'native tongue', according to Harry. Eh. Another highlight was Marnie's entries into her trademark Moleskines. My personal favorite:

"Dear Diary: I don't like Canada anymore. I quit, eh."

Since Chapel never takes her resignation seriously, she has to find something else to quit.
Why not Canada?

Marnie also seems to have mellowed a bit. She is certainly still a riot, but she has a bit more professionalism. Don't get me wrong, she still cusses a blue-streak and goes about investigating in a truly unconventional manner, but she has matured. And sadly, she was less of a pervert. Still a pervert, but not so much of the horndog variety. The pervert award this time around goes to Scarrow, the priest-not priest-maybe priest who trains dogs. He's one freaky fella.

If you're already familiar with this series, this installment doesn't disappoint. It's filled with the trademark humor and foul (yet creative!) language I've grown to expect from Marnie Baranuik. The favored characters also do not disappoint. Harry was fussy, as always, Batten was his usual hunky and dour self. Anyone who hasn't read this series, I suggest starting at the first book and working your way to this one. I strongly recommend each and every book in this series and will happily continue reading for as long as AJ Aalto writes.

Love this series !
By Mary E. Carter
Love this series -- Great writing ! Great world building ! Great characters ! The most creative swearing that has ever been created ! It was a good idea to put her in a new environment with new characters -- I hope she goes back. I hope she gets to be with these new and well developed characters some more. I do hope she gets to grow up and begin to find herself and not let the men in her life objectify her as much. I hope her sexual longing is satisfied, as long as the sex scenes are not too extensive ..... I find that sex scenes begin to get redundant rather quickly ..... I wish A J success with this series -- and may she write many, many more !
