`South Park is not a town it's a state of mind.'

In this book, published in 2007, Ms Johnson-Woods looks at the history and origins of South Park and traces its success. And like the show or loathe it, no-one can question its success: South Park is currently in its 13th season.

South Park is a gloriously irreverent hybrid of comedy, parody, irony and satire. No issue seems to be out of bounds and no celebrity is beyond its reach. But who does it appeal to, and why does it work so well? The satirical tradition in South Park can be traced back to Rabelais: fearless and frequently foul-mouthed humour is no modern invention. The role of the Internet for South Park fans, especially in the earlier days is well worth reflecting on. South Park has a vibrant fan community even though many of the unofficial sites are now gone.

The book is divided into three parts. The first part covers the genesis of South Park, and describes how it became so popular. The second part covers the construction of the show itself: the characters, the dialogue, the visuals and the sounds. The final part deals with the issues addressed in the show. A conclusion, presented under the heading `You Know, I've Learned Something Today' draws together a succinct summary of Ms Johnson-Woods's findings.

Fans of South Park will enjoy this book, but those interested in popular culture will find it particularly valuable. This is a very accessible book, and has a terrific select bibliography for those who are interested.

Great book about South Park and culture

This is a great book about South Park and its relationship to contemporary culture. Many of the insights end up surprising. There are three parts to this book. The first part mentions the impact of South Park on culture and how it became popular and widespread. The second part is about the show itself: the dialogue, sounds, characters, and visuals. The third part deals with the issues presented in the show. There was an extensive amount of research done for this book and it shows. The author is also not a fan, so the insights come from a more neutral perspective, which makes the book an even better read.

The author also spends a lot of time on the impact and popularity of the show, which is unlike most book about tv shows and culture. The characters chapter is long but still unusually short for a tv show and culture book. Most books about TV shows and culture devote and entire unit and at least 40 pages to talk about the characters. Because she only devotes a chapter, there could have easily been more said about the characters.

All in all, if you are a fan of South Park or like reading about popular culture, then you should read this book. It is entertaining, insightful, and enjoyable.

It's about time!

Just when I began to despair about finding a real fan resource for South Park, along comes "Blame Canada". The various edited volumes about South Park and philosophy (Arp and Hanley) seem to be collections of scholarly opinions that I am sure are important to some obscure university lecture series on philosophy, and Anderson's "South Park Conservatives" is really only of interest to militant Log Cabin Republicans. "Blame Canada" is well constructed, well written and thought provoking. As a fan, I find it a fascinating resource, more so because the author is clearly NOT a fan herself. Neither a sycophantic piece nor a knee-jerk condemnation, "Blame Canada" is accurate and dispassionate.

My favourite chapter in "Blame Canada" is the chapter on South Park and the internet. It documents a period of internet history that had nearly been lost, in which South Park featured uniquely as a pop culture window into the infancy of the internet. I myself, who came late to the South Park phenomenon, had been unable to track down the grass roots fan information that should have been available on the internet for any pop culture icon as important as South Park. Now I know that it is a result of the engulf-and-devour policy of Comedy Central towards "unauthorized" South Park content on the web, which is somewhat ironic considering the libertarian content of the show. I am left to wonder how much more of internet history is being lost forever as technology changes, web pages are updated without being archived, and corporate America exerts more and more control over internet content.

The most interesting aspect of "Blame Canada", however, is the theoretical framework in which Johnson-woods places the show. South Park is nothing if not carnivalesque, so it is an apt analysis. But more than that, through the Baktine analysis South Park fandom becomes legitimized, and South Park becomes as much (and as normal) a pop culture influence in its time as Star Wars or I Love Lucy were in theirs. It is refreshing to know that fan attraction to fart jokes is as old as fandom itself, and not some new aberrant form of entertainment that is a result of (or even responsible for) the moral decay of our society.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Blame Canada", and I am happy to recommend it highly to any South Park fan. It is a worthy read.

View Into a Rapidly Spinning Moral Compass

In World War II, Germany waged some of the most technically advanced warfare ever witnessed. They leveraged advances in aerodynamics, rocketry, chemicals and medicine to rain destruction and terror on their enemies. As the war ended, the fate of the scientists and engineers who created these innovations were of major interest to the victorious allied forces. There was, however, a huge problem with these Nazi scientists: Many were significant war criminals, some personally responsible for committing atrocious crimes during the conflict.

In the war’s aftermath, the US was left with a dilemma: Should they take advantage of the scientist’s expertise? Prosecute them for their crimes? Or risk having them captured by the Soviets, just as the Cold War was beginning?

Author Annie Jacobsen chronicles the rapidly spinning moral compass the US faced dealing with the fate of the German experts. Using a wide range of documents (including some only recently de-classified for this book) she traces the stories of many notable scientists, and the “Operation Paperclip” the US set up to sanitize their Nazi past. Wernher von Braun, for example, is known to most Americans as the heroic NASA designer who designed the Saturn-V rocket carrying astronauts to the moon. But in WWII, his V-2 missiles killed thousands of civilians in England and northern Europe. The underground factory constructing these missiles worked thousands more concentration camp prisoners to their deaths.

This book traces the frantic search for the scientists and their work as WWII wound down, then the bureaucratic push and pull as various agencies struggled with the scientists fates as well as prosecuting others for war crimes. Finally, she traces the ultimate fate of some of the scientists. Some had prosperous new lives as successful engineers and businessmen. Others ultimately died in disgrace as their Nazi past caught up to them. The book is an important chapter of post-war history just now coming to light.

Good source of information, especially for those of us who were directly affected and come over as children.

This part of the history of rocket science was of particular interest to me as someone who was brought to the USA as a baby because of Operation Paperclip. My father had worked in Berlin and we ended up in Wright Field. I knew we had travelled to Niagara Falls when I was 2 or 3 to officially enter the USA across the Rainbow Bridge. Now I know exactly how/why that happened and all the politics behind it. For me it was fun to find a few names (but not mine) that I recognized from childhood memories in a major historical event. But then I am a history buff and a genealogist.
As for the book itself, it is well written and presumably well researched. My parents had always said that von Braun was a very conceited individual (they used much stronger language though) so I can attest to that research information personally. My father was amazed at what the Americans did NOT know technically about rocket design, even in the 1950's as he had learned all that at University in Munich the 30s! Also another member of my extended family was a rocket scientist in Berlin at the same company and was dragged off to Russia. His house was surrounded by machine guns and the family had 24 hours to get their stuff together.They were there for 10 years before being released. So the competition between Russia and the USA to get these German rocket experts was very real.

Historian or not, you must read this book, if you want to understand the policy power plays that occur behind the curtain.

This is an exceptional read, despite its innocuous title. It is thoroughly and comprehensively documented and though I thought I knew a great deal about Operation Paperclip, having researched it myself, I found multiple revelations affirming the author's thoroughness in uncovering facts and information long buried in various government and media vaults. Fascinating read that will strip away the conventional and reveal the true power plays behind the curtain. Very highly recommended.

Good tool for anyone, esp if you need financial help

I think this book is a great tool for anyone, even if you have a system that's working for you. It's probably more immediately practical for someone who needs help organizing their finances (although I learned things and I have a budget that works well for me).

If you're in financial crisis, GET THIS BOOK. Here's why I think so:

1. Derek takes the time to explain why his steps are beneficial to you. It's a good balance of explanation and strong suggestions and action. I appreciated how he explained why naming all the dollars of your cash on hand is necessary (and if you don't do it, you might grossly over/under-estimate).

2. So many reviewers have mentioned this, but I also like that he asks us to do the difficult work of self-examination and think about why were are in the situation we're in. One favorite example of that is asking us why there is a difference between the way we ARE spending our money and the way we WANT TO be spending our money. YES! Let's figure it out and own that.

3. Also helpful are his charts. I like to FILL STUFF IN. It makes me feel like I'm making progress. You will have to get on line, look up your bank account, and come to terms with reality. So helpful. If you have debt, you are going to write down ALL THE PAYMENTS and the amounts. You are done just ballparking and guessing (and maybe guessing incorrectly). Reality is our friend.

4. If you are married, you are going to have to go through this material with your spouse. But of course you want to do that - your spouse is spending the money also. I think if this is a source of conflict in marriage that is really beating you down, it would be helpful to get this book and take it to another married couple you respect and trust and ask them to mediate or walk through it with you and your spouse. Even if they were just there for accountability, I think this book makes it easy.

5. If you don't have a budget and want to know how one works and what that would look like for you, the worksheet/chart for the preliminary budget is great. Derek does a good job explaining how it works.

6. Also, it's encouraging. You don't just write down everything you're doing wrong. Derek asks at one point: "What spending category is in sync with your values?" Thanks, Derek, for asking me to find something positive to think about, that I'm already doing or at least thinking correctly, especially when doing something difficult like organizing my finances.

I was also thinking that if you're a parent, it might be useful for your high school senior who's about to leave home or a college senior who's about to get their first adult job and adult paycheck. It's something tangible to go through with them to teach them if you haven't known how to teach them already.

If you're not in financial crisis (like myself), I think this is still useful. Here's why:

1. I learned stuff! I totally went to the website link and read about his garage sale to get quick cash. I totally appreciated his advice on impulse purchases and how to avoid buyers remorse (check out the 24/25 rule). I found ways I can increase the health of my finances. I asked myself some questions about the roots of why parts of managing my finances are still hard for me.

2. I liked the practices Derek suggests in the book. But even better, in my opinion, is that Derek's principles are very solid. He doesn't waiver. He has a bottom line and sticks to it, and it's because he really wants to help you be financially healthy. If you're in good shape, you might read some suggestions for practices that are slightly different. Something might be better than what you're already doing! But you'll at least be reminded why you're doing what you're already doing.

If you need help, get the book. Use it.
If you don't need help, get the book. You might learn something. If you don't use it, keep it on hand to recommend to a friend who needs help.

Great resource for getting back on track financially

Derek Olsen has written a helpful, easy-to-understand guide for getting a handle on your money, getting out of debt, and creating a financial plan for the future. This is an ideal guide for single adults, families with kids at home, or anyone else seeking to get their financial house in order. The book is well-organized and well-written, and certainly worth the investment of time it takes to go through it.

A couple of features set the book apart from others covering similar ground:

1) It's not simply a book to read--it's a workbook with lots of exercises and practical steps to take you through the 4-week process. Derek focuses on the action steps needed, and makes it clear how to proceed from week to week.

2) The book helps you think through why you spend money the way you do. What is the real root of your money difficulties? Derek's book is a fantastic resource for helping you deal with the real issues that govern your use of money.

Anyone who has listened to Dave Ramsey or read his material (or attended Financial Peace University) will find similar principles in Derek's workbook. If you need a refresher course or have gotten off track, Derek's workbook can help. Sometimes it's good to get a little different perspective! If you like Dave Ramsey's material, The Four Week Financial Turnaround is a great companion peace that will put hands and feet on many of the same principles.

One thing I would add is that Derek's principles and ideas are easily adapted to budgeting software. I personally use YNAB software and love it, and would never consider going back to a paper budget again. But whatever system you use, the book will be a big help to get you where you want to go.

A MUST Read & Do Book

I highly recommend this book. I am working through it now and find it a very refreshing way to look at your finances. I am no stranger to these types of books as I am always looking to improve myself. What I think makes this book different is that Derek encourages you to look at your past, but don't stay stuck there, and figure out the "why" of your spending habits. Then he encourages you to celebrate the milestone. So often we stay stuck in the past or beat ourselves up for doing the wrong thing that when we change that habit, we forget to give ourselves a little pat on the back. Then he calls us to set goals and take ACTION steps. I love action! Without it we get nowhere and that is exactly where you will be if you don't give this book a try!

Kay Hoover and I are proud to have been pioneers in the lactation field. We realized very early on that our fledgling profession lacked professional educational resources. We picked up cameras and began to document the things we saw in our practices. This became the genesis for the Atlas. The new edition greatly expands our original vision to create a comprehensive manual of mother and infant conditions affecting lactation.

The Breastfeeding Atlas

I consider this book fascinating. Each chapter contains paragraphs that refer to pictures in the back of the book, which lets you know exactally what you are reading about. This is the best resource I have ever seen for learning. It was recommended to me by experienced Lactation Consultants. The consultants said the half of the Lactation Exam Boards are pictures.

Not as good as I had read about in reviews here

I have read a LOT of books in prep for my IBLCE exam this year (and have for several years). This book was not what I expected. I was hoping that the wealth of pictures in this book would help me with studying. It's a lot of flipping back and forth from descriptions to pictures and back.

A Narrative of an Episode in Nicaragua History

Book Review: Adios Muchachos ( In Spanish) Author: Sergio Ramirez
The Author: Sergio Ramirez is re-known nicaraguan writer, a lawyer, and former member of the sandinista governing Junta throughout the eighties, then vice-president and more recently, chairman of the Sandinista political party. As a novelist he is known as author of several novels, his mosr recent is "Margarita Esta Linda La Mar" (1996), essayist and short story writer.
More than one country in Latina America had a writer for president. Costa Rica, Peru and Cuba (Marti), are only a few to name. Sergio managed to stay at the highest ranking governing circles for almost two decades from 1979 until his resignation in 1999 from his seat as Chairman of the Sandinista powerful political party. This was 3 years after his defeat running for his second term as vice-president candidate in 1996.
This book reveals a credible account from a true insider of the preamble to the war, the glory of victory, and the un-expected political struggle that the Sandinistas went through to stay in power and ultimately lose it. Because the free elections took place in a country that had been for ten years fighting a Contra War which depleted the national budget making it almost impossible to rule.
In his narrative, the protagonists come and go ( or die) like characters in a play. Some manage to come back "with a different costume" like a in giant theater, and history becomes a play with episodes. As Sergio relates, "I am glad I was not born before or after this chapter of history, because I would have missed it". Asked if he has any regrets, Sergio answers: "We did what it was right back then, what happened later we had few idea, how it would be "
Apparently, after reading the Epilog it seems that the true protagonist (if any other than the revolution itself) is Idania ( who was my sister) symbolizing the spirit of sacrifice and heroism that made this chapter of the nicaraguan history possible. Her martyrdom symbolizes the crushing of a dream. I was particularly moved by this. Idania, Araceli and Dora Maria were for the nicaraguan revolution what Haydee Santamaria and Celia Sanchez were for its cuban counterpart.
Sergio concludes his story with an interview with Claudia, the daughter that Idania had left in care of her parents ( and mine) when death came by surprise ( and to her 5 comrades) as member of the Sandinista Commando that was actually running the war in the Western Front in April 1979. The interview takes place in a Deli shop in Arlington, Virginia, an area of town where lobbyists, journalists and essayists meet for lunch and discuss policies and legislation. As she waves good bye before boarding the subway train, the scene symbolizes the return to normal lives of the protagonists of this Episode in the nicaraguan history. Apparently as if nothing has happened in last 20 years. Or has it? Is there a legacy or rewards? Sergio says there is...

The life of Sergio Ramirez has been an effort to bring about logical, intelligent change to the Central American isthmus and to develop his narrative along revolutionary lines. This book is a prime example of the importance of Sergio as one of the most essential and overlooked authors in Latin American literature. His ability to bring alive the dreams, plights, success and defeat of the Nicaraguan revolution, more than 10 years their electoral downfall, shows how politics and human sensitivity are intertwined in Latin America. His account of the Sandinista revolution is excellent because from its start, he was a player, and although he did not fall within the dogmas of some of his contemporaries, he is not without fault. At its core, his account continues that old school adage "Don't mess with Uncle Sam".

I am quite the fan of Tony Evans! I heard him preach on the radio and God's Word was so moving! I highly recommend this book! I forgive because God's forgiven me! There are days I struggle when a past situation comes back into memory and I can get angry or bitter. This book helps with that! Whatever spectrum on forgiveness that you're on. The Durling-Martinez Inferno is also user-friendly. The Italian text, newly edited, is printed on each verso page; the English mirrors it in such a way that readers can easily find themselves in relation to the original terza rima. Designed with the first-time reader of Dante in mind, the volume includes comprehensive notes and textual commentary by Martinez and Durling: both are life-long students of Dante and other medieval writers (their Purgatorio and Paradiso will appear next year). Their introduction is a small masterpiece of its kind in presenting lucidly and concisely the historical and conceptual background of the poem. Sixteen short essays are provided that offer new inquiry into such topics as the autobiographical nature of the poem, Dante's views on homosexuality, and the recurrent, problematic body analogy (Hell has a structure parallel to that of the human body). The extensive notes, containing much new material, explain the historical, literary, and doctrinal references, present what is known about the damned souls Dante meets --from the lovers who spend eternity in the whirlwind of their passion, to Count Ugolino, who perpetually gnaws at his enemy's skull--disentangle the vexed party politics of Guelfs and Ghibellines, illuminate difficult and disputed passages, and shed light on some of Dante's unresolved conflicts.
Robert Turner's illustrations include detailed maps of Italy and several of its regions, clearly labeled diagrams of the cosmos and the structure of Hell, and eight line drawings illustrating objects and places mentioned in the poem. If a recent spate of new translations is any evidence, Dante remains as popular as ever with the general reading public. Durling's new verse translation of the Inferno joins recent versions by Robert Pinsky (LJ 1/93) and Mark Musa (LJ 3/1/95). While Durling's translation (with Italian on the facing page) does not use Dante's rhyme or line divisions, it captures the metrical rhythm of the original. Similarly, his rendering of Dante's diction is literal and accurate, conveying the tone and feel while remaining accessible. Supplemented with an introduction, useful notes, and appendixes, this version, soon to be joined by Purgatorio and Paradiso, can be recommended to the general reader. Beautiful prose version of Dante's extraordinary poem

I feel so enthusiastic about this book that I want to tell everybody about it. This translation is unrhymed; it is in prose; and it follow's Dante's syntax and meaning closely. If you know a little Italian, you can use the text (it is a bilingual edition) as a crib to read Dante in the original, which is a tremendously moving experience. Dante's Hell is full of striking characters who still feel the passions they experienced during their life in history; only now their identity is even more sharply defined because they are living in eternity. The narrator travelling through Hell, guided by Virgil, is filled with fear, pity and anguish. Dante's writing is extraordinarily beautiful and supple.

great translation, great notes

The Durling-Martinez edition is the one used in my college Dante class. Together with their translation of Purgatorio (their edition of Paradiso apparently still in progress), the two works have great endnotes for every canto of the poem, good appendices and Purgatorio has a series of 'intercantica' notes which refer the reader to all the parallels between the two works, so you don't have to remember that the Gates of Hell and the Gates of Purgatory are found in Canto 9 of their respective works.

I wrote this review because the top reviews for this edition were all in fact for other editions, and this one definitely deserves its due. It may be more expensive than Mandelbaum's paperback, but its worth it. The print is larger, the language clearer, the notes more useful. Try it out.

A Beautiful Translation and Informative Endnotes

Dante's _Inferno_ is truly one of the most fascinating and riveting epic poems of all time. This edition of the _Inferno_, translated by Durling Martinez, is wonderful, jam-packed with all sorts of extras that lend itself to study and careful examination. The Italian verse and English prose translation mirror each other on each page and Martinez's translation is extremely user-friendly, allowing the reader to get caught up in the emotion of Dante's powerful masterpiece without trying to observe the strict meter requirements of the original.

In addition to the Italian text, Martinez provides copious amounts of end notes to each Canto. The only shame is that they are presented as end notes and not as footnotes, forcing the reader to thumb back and forth frequently while reading. Many of them are so interesting and helpful that it would have been useful to be able to access them with more ease. That being said, however, once you see the size and length of the end notes, you will understand while they have been given their own section.

On top of all of the end notes, providing the historical and literary context for all of Dante's allusions, this edition also include illustrations, including one showing the organization of Hell, and sixteen short essays that focus on various aspects of the _Inferno_. At over 650 pages long, this edition is a serious one and is best used for serious study rather than a book to shove in your pocket for pleasure reading. But if you desire to delve into the _Inferno_, this edition is fantastic for its amount of scholarship and user-friendliness. I highly recommend this edition for any fan of Dante and anyone approaching the _Inferno_ for the first time.
